Yesterday I had the most insane views of Wallcreeper. I simply sat by the base of the cliff and waited as it worked it's loop. After a few hours it appeared in front of me and absolutely gave itself up. What a bird. Taken in the Catalan Pyrenees.

Another gem of the Catalan Pyrenees; I caught this Lammergeir out of the corner of my eye as I was driving from spot to spot on a recent visit. I stopped and it drifted and circled right over my head. What a bird!
Had 3 wagtails fly in from S and land on pole over my head, showing only their tails sticking out. To my shock, when they flew, one had a black head! The other was a flava and third a flavissima. White behind eye points to superciliaris (feldegg x flava). Cahore - Wexford (work)
Was delighted to find this male Citrine Wagtail on patch at Delta Llobregat this morning. A lifer for me and the 19th record for the delta. Had a bit of a binocular shaking moment!!!
A trio of flycatchers!! Collared, Pied and Spotted all along the same stretch of sheltered walkway at Delta Llobregat. Collared is a rare vagrant here but the recent easterlies have resulted in an unprecedented influx involving > 40 birds and i finally got to see one today!
After a lot of dreaming, hair-raising hiking and failures, I'm elated to say; I have sound-recorded a male Wallcreeper in the Catalan Pyrenees. I think this is the 1st sound-recording for Catalunya (glad to be corrected). Thanks to everyone that helped.

Picked up this male Black Redstart on song today in Cork City today, as well as a female type and an adult Ring-billed Gull, with Harry Hussey. Pictures aren't the best as they had to be taken at 3200 ISO in fading light.
More Wallcreeper photos from 2 days ago in the Catalan Pyrenees. What a bird!
To hear a recording (the 1st for Catalunya?) of the bird:
To hear the backstory to seeing this bird listen to ep' 4 of the Phil More's Corner Podcast:
Amazingly diverse and accurate mimicry by a Calandra Lark, recorded early this month at Alfés, Catalunya. Ten species were reeled off with ease. I'll be spending some more time with these soon!

The hauntingly beautiful song of the Common Rock Thrush, from the Catalan Pyrenees, this July. This was the 1st time I heard this, in life & it blew me away. It totally captures the serenity of the Pyrenees in summer.

Currently in Bucharest to get myself some experience with Caspian Gull. Learned a lot and saw a few hundred birds of all ages today at Hesastrau Park. A great site with 5+ sp of Woodpecker as well as Pygmy Cormorant.
Here's one from a few weeks back. A lovely showy Citril Finch, again from Fontalba in the Catalan Pyrynees. Photographed from the car window on a grassy verge at the side of the track.
Happy St. Patrick's Day☘️ from Ireland's national bird 🇮🇪: the Lapwing!
Such a beautiful, almost cosmic-sounding bird. A sound we are losing.
Due to the draining of our wetlands, & the intensification of our agri-systems, Lapwing has suffered a decline of 53% in the last 40yrs!
Nocmig has gotten really exciting the last few days with a steady stream of Ring Ouzel over the apartment (Vic, Catalunya). I had a record count of 10 in 1 night on 12/10. Here are some of the better recordings:

I've decided to start sharing my growing collection of audio files rather than have them sitting idle.
First up is a flock of 100+ Alpine Chough, which called wheeling overhead recently in the Catalan Pyrenees.
Taken with the superb Dodotronic Hi-Sound Stereo

Incredible mimicry by Spotless Starlings of C Buzzard, car alarm, Black Kite, B-h Gull, R-l Partridge, Thekla L, C Linnet, C Crow, G Plov', G Oriole, H Sparrow, L Owl, Mallard & Juv' LEO. The first 11 sp all from 1 bird!

A hunting Short-eared Owl at Sheep's Head and a Great White Egret at Mizen Head was a nice end to yesterday's birding. One more day of it now. Let's what what turns up...
A close flyby flock of Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, recorded earlier this winter at Huesca, Spain. An iconic sound of the Spanish and Catalan steppes.

This year, I'm on a mission to sound record as many species as possible in 12 months in Catalunya. This was my 1st tricky sp. A big thanks to

Despite continued searching I still havent found any nearctic waders (yet). Two showy crispy Curlew Sand's were the best at Ballycotton this afternoon.
As I'm here: had another go at the local Green Bee-eaters, this time they didn't care about me one bit and the light was perfect. They are gorgeous. Taken in Bardia National Park, Nepal.
The last few from one of the uber-tame Alpine Accentors this weekend here in Catalunya. I'll be going back for more and seeking out snowfinch and wallcreeper one weekend very soon!
A recent trip to the Catalan Pyrynees gave me my best views of Crossbills yet. I never knew they sometimes take the whole pine cone. I saw them do this several times, after which they went into the deep cover of the conifers to eat.
Some nice raptors from Boumort in Northern Catalunya recently: Short-toed Eagle being chased off by a Common Swift, Egyptian Vulture, and juv' Lammergeir being chased by a Kestrel. What a site for raptors! Booted Eagle and Griffon Vulture also seen on the day.
First day back recording in the Pyrenees after confinement restrictions here (in Catalunya) have loosened. Didn't get the biggie (wallcreeper) [yet], but some very nice consolations in the form of singing Tawny Pipit, Rock Thrush, Citril Finch etc. More to follow!
It's been a while - I've been very busy recording and surveying! Here is a recent one from a site I discovered in Lleida with high densities of both European & Red-necked Nightjars together!

Went to see a Marsh Sandpiper, amongst 15+ wood sand, 20+ ruff, loads of lrp, several Kentish, 60+ glossy ibis, little stint, 3 purple heron, and swarms of hirundines. To top off an Arctic Skua joined the gang and nearly gave me a heart attack. First record inside the reserve.
All's well that ends well! The Iberian Chiffchaff which I found on Friday, at Delta del Llobregat but failed to sound-record, performed for the weekend, and I made a second visit. Excuse the airplanes!

Howling easterlies here in Cataluña has resulted in double figures of Collared Flycatchers being discovered today. I've been kept busy with 30+ Wood Warbler (+ 1 exhausted bird at my feet), 2 Tree Pipit, 15 + Pied Fly, 20+ Spot Fly, etc. No Collared for me but going again tomor'
An iconic sound of Catalan wetlands - the prehistoric bellowing of a Western Swamphen (with a Bluethroat tacking in the background), recorded this weekend. A truly impressive call!

Hawfinch from last night. Can't believe it. My apartment and surrounds are the last place you would expect to encounter this species but this is the joy of this game. Really becoming hooked!

In the absence of any really rare waders today at Ballycotton I decided to spend some time with these lovely juvenile Curlew Sandpipers in the strong winds that are typical of the site.
New blog post!
My own summary and understanding of Spotted & Mediterranean Flycatchers, in Catalunya, with some candidate Mediterranean Flycatchers I recorded this spring in and around Delt del Llobregat.
Wow! A NOCMIG Ybw flew over my little balcony in El Prat de Llobregat at 21:56 last night, calling 3 times. I normally don't record on rainy nights but as it was a strong easterly I tried and glad I did! It seems the rain drove it down and it called then.
It's not everyday you see an Arctic Skua in the same frame as a Black-winged Stilt. Taken at Delta Llobregat, Catalunya recently, this represented the first in-site record of Arctic Skua, all other records coming from sea-watches from the beaches.
I wish people would slow down on rural roads, especially under the cover of darkness, when foxes, badgers and other mammals roam. The amount of cold, lifeless corpses I see on the roads in the mornings is really upsetting. (1/2)
A nice fresh White Wagtail from Ballycotton, Co. Cork yesterday. There are some interesting systems crossing the Atlantic and I went (seeming immaturely) out to search for some Nearctic waders around East Cork. No joy but surely some on the way. I'll keep looking!
Calls from a displaying male Marsh Harrier on a beautiful spring day, last weekend in Catalunya.
I spent a good hour watching as they sky-danced, performed food-passes and built nests - beats Netflix any day!

Otters have always been a favourite of mine having chased and studied them for years back home so I was delighted to see a new species here in Bardia National Park Nepal: a feeding party of 9 (!) Smooth-coated Otters! They were swimming feeding and jumping clear of the water!
Alpine Accentors are moving down to their wintering quarters in Catalunya now. I was delighted to have at least 5 VISMIG birds heading south, between finch flocks, lately. Audio was made earlier this year @ Siurana.

Two frequent sounds of the higher meadows in the Catalan Pyrenees. Cow-bells & Alpine Chough! Listen closely and you can hear begging calls from the young, as one of the adults feeds them, high up in a ski-lift.

Another great days birding at Delta Llobregat with lots of migrants including: Ortolan Bunting, Roller, 2 Golden Orioles, Tree Pipit, some thunbergi yellow wags, lots of pied fly and common restart, 1 woodchat, still lots of wood warbler and lots more! Fantastic
Finally got my

A nocturnal recording of a foraging group of Wild Boar, recorded recently in Catalunya as I slept alongside in my van, blissfully unaware. The snoring sounds aren't from me but I was probably making similar noises! Photo my own.

Finally took the opportunity to visit Lleida today. What an incredible site! Highlights: Black kite (200+) Red Kite (20+), Griffon Vulture (100+), Golden Eagle (3), Calandra Lark (30+), 1 Southern Grey Shrike, 1 singing quail and fantastic views of several singing Little Bustard!
Iberian Green Woodpecker @ first light in the Catalan Pyrenees and my 1st recording of last weekend. The tranquility this clip brings, illustrates just why I'm drawn to this place time and time again.

It's good to be back birding in Delta Llobregat. A quick scout of reserve yesterday left me highly impressed. Cal Nani is flooded and looking amazing with lush vegetation and muddy pools. Lots of Wood Sandpiper as well as a massive influx of Plain Tigers which finally posed well!
The second part of the Dodotronic Hi-Sound Stereo Parabola setup, undertaken in the Catalan Pyrynees, featuring Alpine Chough, Crossbills, Crested Tits and more. Conclusion: Amazing quality and results which come with a fantastic price tag.

Came across another adult Ring-billed Gull today, this time at Cuskinny, Cobh. A dark eyed herring gull was the only really gull of interest at Ballycotton.
Dawn chorus day can be every day, and some can sound very different. Check out this sea-cliff chorus recorded yesterday along our rugged Atlantic coast.
Dawn chorus from the sea-cliffs. Life abounds amidst the pounding waves of our Atlantic Ocean. Wrens and Stonechats bring melody to the salty air. Ravens croak from their nest ledge as Rock Pipits tumble in song from a height.
Relax to a 15min version:
Another amazing night of

from my balcony (El Prat de Llobregat) last night. Still going through the data but best birds so far have been Brambling and HAWFINCH!!
(FROM MY BALCONY!!! :P)
Today was another Black Redstart day. I went looking for an adult male in the hopes of obtaining some kind of shot and I was not let down. I found two (and several female types) which approached and fed at my feet, with some field-craft and patience.
Various calls given from a Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus), which was initially calling from within a reed-bed (before flying and landing in a nearby tree) at Estany d'Ivars, Catalunya, 18th January 2020.

Went as far as Bantry today with Harry Hussey looking for gulls. Nothing rare or even scarce this thing but these two beauties posed very nicely along the way!
Some highlights from a hike in Garraf, Catalunya this weekend: Green Hairstreak (a new butterfly for me! - always missed it in Ireland), Ophrys fusca, aka Sombre/Dark Bee Orchid (my first Catalan orchid) and Narcissus assoanus, aka Rush-leaf Jonquil (a small daffodil species).
Some signs of spring are starting to trickle in Catalunya. Here, a pond full of Perez' Frogs can be heard croaking from Mas de Melons in Lleida, recorded last weekend.

Impressed at the variability in Water Rail vocalisations, recorded in the last week.

Today's highlight were these two Wood Warblers (Delta Llobregat). Winds very strong at the moment but I suspect there are good birds to be found when it calms.
