QCMSS series. It's free for downloading and viewing online for a limited period, take advantage of the opportunity to add this to your collection!
As some of you know I’ve been working on racing the 5K. My previous personal best was 22:07. This morning in the rainy Lakewood Race I smashed that previous personal record!
Our new Center for Science, Society, and Public Policy
@CaltechCsspp
has launched and we will be announcing a number of events very soon! Great story on
@Caltech
's website about the Center.
For political scientists interested in learning how to use
#LLMs
and
#GenAI
in their research, check out this new paper where we provide some ideas for how to use
#LLMs
for poli sci research.
A year older, but still getting faster. A new half marathon PR for me, fastest M2B for me yet. It’s not been an easy training cycle for this one, this is a real win for me. This is a team effort, thanks to my family, Coach Sammy McClintock, and Adrienne Fildes for their help.
We are very excited to be organizing this conference
@Caltech
. We are especially looking for social science research on the implications of
#AI
and
#genAI
for politics, economies, and society. Please apply - or DM if you have questions. Hosted by
@CaltechCsspp

It’s hard to teach in an N95 mask, with a couple of air filtration units running full-blast in the classroom. But it is great to be back in-person. And I appreciate all of the work that
@Caltech
done so that we can be in-person, safely.
Well-deserved recognition of John's incredible intellectual and professional contributions. He is a great scholar, an incredible mentor, and a wonderful person.
Congratulations to John Aldrich! He has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of distinguished achievements in original research.
If you are an undergrad (or know of a student of yours) who is interested in summer research in computational social science at
@Caltech
, still time to apply!
We have an exciting new book that will be available soon in our Analytical Methods for Social Research series at Cambridge University Press! Gelman, Hill, and Vehtari's "Regression and Other Stories". Here's some info from

Caltech is doubling the number of students hosted in the WAVE Fellows program (thanks to support from several Institute research centers). WAVE aims to increase the participation of underrepresented students in
#STEM
doctoral studies.
I was just sitting in my Caltech office wondering why I have a landline office phone. I don’t think I’ve used it since March 2020. Then it rang! With a wrong number. Back to wondering why I have a landline office phone.
Got up to 10,519 ft this morning on my snowshoes. It was a truly exceptional experience. Wanted to share this photo, and wish everyone an early Happy New Year!
If you are out for a walk, hike, or run, you’ll see a lot of other people out as well. Practice social distance, but also say hi, wave, and smile. Let’s be friendly to each other in this uncertain time. You’ll feel better, and you might brighten someone’s day.
Getting better at racing the 5K. Improved my PR by 44 seconds in this morning’s Cypress Run 5K (22:07). It was a fun race with some pretty strong competition!
Coming to
@Caltech
Spring 2023, BEM/Ec 120: Introduction to Sports Science. From yours truly &
@docsheadgames
. We'll have weekly guests from the sports world and will introduce students to sports data and methods. Looking forward to it (space may be limited)!
Want to work with us at

Here’s what
@Caltech
’s 2022 commencement looks like from the faculty seats! Nice to be back in person for the celebration of the accomplishments of our graduates.
Spent much of the day observing
@LACountyRRCC
primary election vote center operations. Four
@Caltech
students came along, collected some useful data. Students learn a lot in the field, they see election administration in practice!
Ran the M2B half marathon this morning in 1:43:09, 4:33 faster than pre-pandemic in 2019. And I’m three years older! Thanks to my family and friends for their support. Thanks to Coach
@SarahCrouch89
for her help on this journey.
Congratulations to
@sysilviakim
! She just successfully defended her PhD thesis, and is now nearly officially a doctor! She's got the screenshot from the defense! Another great
@Caltech
PhD!
It is nice to open my inbox and see a conditional acceptance for a paper that we have been working on for some time now. More soon (after we receive the final accept)!
Every once in a while someone will say "Caltech studies elections?" Well, we do, and it's a very impressive group of faculty who are
@Caltech
's "Election Experts"!

Thanks to the amazing
@nado1377
for spending the morning discussing election administration and technology with the

@NevadaCountyCA
and California! Students learn so much from
For the final assignment in my campaigns & elections class this quarter, I asked students to pick a US House or Senate incumbent. Task one: Write a script for a 30-second negative radio ad targeting the incumbent. Task two: have
#ChatGPT
write the script.
Academic journal editors need to demonstrate some courage, we need to see more applied research published, more facts about the real world, and work that is relevant to the pressing political, social, and economic problems we face today. I'll stop there.
Interested in the Social Science PhD program
@caltech
?
@Jonathan_N_Katz
and I will be available to discuss quantitative political science on November 9 at 2pm Pacific! Colleagues - please share with your students! Register here:
We had a research meeting today at
@Activision
in Santa Monica. A great day discussing data and research. We ended with a
#CallofDuty
boot camp (of course we need to play to understand the data generation process). The game play got so intense we blew a fuse, twice.
I’m pretty sure that
@Caltech
’s entire campus might fit within the perimeter of many UT-Dallas buildings and their parking lots. Thanks for the tour and hosting the conference,
@PatrickTBrandt
!
Really excited to have the opportunity to travel with
@CaltechHoops
to the Midway Classic in Chicago this weekend. Looking forward to our games tomorrow and Sunday, had a great practice this afternoon!
@Caltech
The WAVE Fellows program supports underrepresented undergraduate students from colleges and universities other than Caltech to spend 10 weeks conducting summer research under the guidance of a Caltech faculty member.
All academic journals should publish data on time-to-decision. They should also be transparent about the stages of the process. I submitted to a major poli sci journal on 2/4; status changed to "with editor" on 2/10; despite emailing to the journal, radio silence.
So we have to practice social distance. We need to exercise. Few people are driving. Why not shut down more streets and traffic lanes this weekend so we can walk, bike, run, safely from each other and from traffic?
@PasadenaGov
@PasadenaPD
Rumor has it that our next Element, by
@DevinCaughey
,
@AdamBerinsky
,
@poliscisara
, Erin Hartman, Eric Schickler, and Jas Sekhon on "Target Estimation and Adjustment Weighting for Survey Nonresponse and Sampling Bias" will be published soon and free access for a while!
It’s election season in SoCal! Enjoyed taking
@Caltech
students to observe
@LACountyRRCC

@LACountyRRCC
facilities, great opportunity to learn more about election admin in LA County!
I gave an undergrad in one of my classes a DVD to watch. They came back a few days later to ask if I had a way for them to play it - apparently they couldn’t find a DVD player in their dorm nor among their friends. I guess that’s a sign of the times.
Caltech's
