Hey chat, do we think this government hiring program will be successful?
The recent AI executive order calls for a technical talent surge into government. To help with this, OPM just authorized a government-wide direct hire authority for AI roles. Using flexible hiring authorities is going to be essential for building state capacity in this area.

what did y’all think free trade meant? vibes? press releases? annual conferences? losers.
Yemen didn’t kill a single person when they were taking over those ships and rerouting them out of the Red Sea. America killed an entire crew of Yemenis in the water today. Muslims have always done everything possible to avoid unnecessary killing while America tries to kill.

51% of our country doesn’t on net pay income taxes, and yet we have a marginally better GDP/capita than the world’s most autistically precise and competent society. I find this insane at times.

Amazing that a machined piece of steel and some chemicals has a similar cost to something in the class of the most intricate things humanity has ever produced by orders of magnitude.
The price of an NVIDIA A100 and a NATO 155mm artillery shell has now risen to almost exactly the same level and both are now routinely referred to in articles as 'one of the most coveted objects in the world'.

Buying books from a bookstore is actually a pretty strong midwit signal. I will not explain further.
Places you can absolutely find your future wife at: . - high end grocery stores .- bookstores .- church .- farmers markets .- pilates studio.- twitter . Places you will not find your future wife at: . - bars.- clubs .- raves.

Not to be a prick, but you can tell that no one is getting work done by the noise level and the fact that half the people have their laptops in horrible positions for typing.

Finance theory says roughly that the value of a company is the risk adjusted present value of its future cash flows . If you believe this, then you believe that Microsoft is going to produce more risk adjusted cash flows that then UK will, over the course of their two lives.
Microsoft’s market cap is the same size as the entire UK stock market. Apple’s market cap is the same size as the entire Canadian stock market. NVIDIA’s market cap is the same size as the entire German stock market.

Stupid question - is there not a competitive process where different companies bid on stuff like this to get to the lowest price?. What drives retarded numbers like this? Where does the money actually go?.
Only San Francisco could manage *$6.8 billion per mile* rail extension between two stations. This city is run by children.

@bryancsk Partly because they don't have the rail network density. In the US, you have tiny side of the railroad towns like Frisco, TX that were founded forever ago, that become bigger/huge in the modern era as US cities build further and further out.

@MaxDemi43573607 Yeah my grad student friend once remarked that a lot of the problems they give are things that everyone knows but no one ever actually works out, and the prof just wants to see the answer.

@ByrneHobart Supposedly the NSA is going to add an on-site sushi bar next quarter. Honestly it would make all the difference for me.

@acidshill Yeah you always have to ask yourself how the conversation went on the product team that implemented this. What was the justification? Who agreed, or didn’t? Were people bullied into going along with it, or was it just that they didn’t care? Why didn’t they care?.

@eigenrobot The two seat front to back + weapons on stub wings on the side is design convergence + nose gun + rotor shaft electronics is design convergence, other similarities I’m less lenient with.

@wanyeburkett Part of the issue is that a lot of these people are just not connected in any way to violence. You see this whenever the shoot to wound crowd shows up - they’ve got no clue how lethal being shot in the limbs is, for example.

@PolkPunished I mostly enjoyed these but they were clearly meant to be hard enough that even with the internet you couldn’t cheat effectively.

@shitwolfymakes Ok do you think the locality bonuses will get the expected TC up to 350-700k?. And yes I don’t *really* understand government pay, I work in the private sector.

@jayriverlong They are the only very rich country that isn’t a dig thing out of the ground state or a micro nation, besides the US, basically. Clearly it works great, it’s just not enough for number 1.

@space_colonist I mean if you make a top 10% income for 30 years, save a respectable amount and put that into the stock market, you’re basically guaranteed to hit that mark.

Well today was the most important day in American political history in a generation. We’re very lucky that M193 really sucks at bucking wind
@octal @trickylabyrinth 55 grain ball at 125m in stiff wind with a mediocre zero is definitely enough to miss a minute of man sized target.

@zeta_globin The environmentalism thing that gets me the most is this New Zealand law against nuclear powered ships in their waters. It’s a hilarious combination of the law doing nothing, most breaches being totally undetectable, and a total lack of ability to enforce it if needed.

@paleonormie Why? 1980 is only 4 years after Mao’s death. I’d expect China at that point to be insanely poor even by African standards.

@PolkPunished Actually - these were open textbook as well. One of the problems was accidentally taken from the book, so I put something in to the effect of “Proof is in Artin, 2.14, reproduced here with minimal modification”. I still got full credit for that.

@ludwigABAP If you spend a lot of time in high lvl math classes, you do just notice things that look like “natural talent”, or lack thereof. Someone will do the work, and spend 10 minutes stumbling through an explanation only for the next person to say it succinctly in 15 seconds.

@tolstoybb Morbid aside, the fact that ~95% of the guys in the Soviet 1924 generation died in the war (and similar numbers for 1924 +/- a few years) really really screwed up gender relations for those that survived.

Von Neumann really was someone who just turned everything to 11. Huge shame he died early.
Von Neumann, who described himself to the Senate as "violently anti-Communist and much more militaristic than the norm", responded to Oppenheimer saying Manhattan Project scientists had "known sin" with the reply "Sometimes someone confesses a sin in order to take credit for it.".

Everyone is tweeting about this as if these people are luddites opposed to autonomy or something, and just need to be shown the light. In reality, they’re low IQ, low impulse control quasi-communists who get a kick out of this. Just put them in prison and leave them there.

@haye_peterman More third places would be a good thing. I’m not knocking bookstores as a date spot (I’ve done this before, it’s not a bad choice). But you rarely find the kind of books you actually want there.
