It is with great sadness that I inform you that my best friend Maria Creveling passed away peacefully in her sleep yesterday. Her absence will leave a void that can never be filled.
Latest on Substack: I'm as surprised as everyone but it turns out not only is Counter-Strike 2 real but it's coming very soon. Sources with a knowledge of the games development reveal details of the upcoming beta release.
Sources familiar with the deal have informed me that while Facebook did try and negotiate to keep their big partners both Shroud and Ninja opted out. They have received their full payments and as of midnight yesterday were free to engage in talks with other platforms. Game on.
So sickening to see r/livestreamfails have an entire front page talking about tragedy and the importance of mental health, when in reality there is no other subreddit that does more to try and drive content creators over the edge. Guess the lies beat looking in the mirror.
All the people who doubted my reporting and sent me abusive messages for weeks just know I am going to be taking souls when I get back from Malta. Enjoy your video game dickheads.
Obviously will be doing the usual post major stream when I get back but a few things before then. I can't express how much I needed this event. I got to work alongside a GOAT esports host, see old friends, hang out with people I love but barely see and throw to Harry and Hugo for
Didn't tweet during the event as the cardinal sin is to let bullshit spill into the broadcast, something that lasts forever and must always be treated as if it were sacred. This was a very challenging event for everyone involved and we will doubtlessly talk about that later.
She would not have wanted any lengthy statements or grand eulogies. Despite having fans all over the world she was never one who craved the spotlight. My only request is that anyone wanting to pay tribute reach out to ensure that it is done in a manner that respects her wishes.
I've had confirmation from multiple colleagues that Rick Fox was not on the helicopter. I don't know how the rumours got started but I'm just glad people are telling me he is safe.
I legitimately couldn't imagine ever talking to my audience like this, let alone just after the holiday season when money is tight. As a streamer its your job to make your stream profitable. Any donation/sub is a welcome bonus and should never be expected.
Twitch are really trying to outdo themselves for stupid bans this Summer. Anomaly got banned for 30 days for showing a "Minecraft Hitler" for less than 2 seconds.
A tribute to Kobe Bryant from the BBC used footage of Lebron James because fuck checking the name on the back of a jersey. All the bullshit I've seen today is why I am utterly ashamed of my profession. There are no standards anymore.
@NoahShachtman
@erinbiba
Think we figured out why she deleted her entire tweet history... As an editor can you explain why it was OK for your journalist to repeatedly publicly insult someone who would go on to be the subject of an article smearing them using guilt by association? Hardly impartial is it?
Today's CS:GO drama: A thread.
First, esports is really facing some long term problems with journalists that blur the line with being influencers too, a terrible trend. You have people who have never done actual reporting essentially being "the news" for fans.
Also, if you're wondering why so many people stood up and applauded what I said, think how many of those people that did have been misrepresented and lied about by outlets like the ones I named. People are sick of it from top to bottom. Let's see if the message has been received.
Retired Overwatch pro Ted "silkthread" Wang shows the email he was sent by the league after he posted "does anyone else love Pepe the frog" on Twitter. The email said this was “unacceptable” and a “violation of the spirit of diversity and inclusiveness that makes Overwatch great.
Unfortunately there's no other way to interpret G2's victory against a stacked field at a major tournament as an indictment on Hooxi's tactical approach to the game. Winning an event with a stand-in who played worse than him in all but one series should realistically be the end.
Today Tyler Barriss, the piece of shit who called in multiple bomb threats and SWATting incidents that led to the death of Andrew Finch, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
There are moments along any truly great sportsperson's career that transcend their talents, moments in time that define their character and courage. This was and will be his.
Your reminder that esports is the mainstream now and we have an obligation to not cooperate with publications that continually lie about our industry and the people within it.
So, this month MiBR have had a player fined for racist abuse, weaponized a fanbase against another Brazilian team to force them to replay a round they didn't have to, had their coach shown seemingly stream-sniping and now publicly accused 2 teenage pros of cheating against them.
The floodgates have opened and in come the bad metacritic reviews from players beyond disappointed at The Last of Us 2's awful story. Will be fun reading the upcoming opinion pieces explaining why bigots are "review bombing" the game.
Want to wish
@paszaBiceps
all the best for his fight tomorrow. Known him many years and he is exactly the type of ambassador esports should hold up. A glittering career, remained down-to-Earth and continues to promote esports to new audiences. I'll be watching.
Was great to host one last major and roll it back. It is a gift I never expected or felt entitled to. Back to retirement now knowing I was part of something special.
This IEM Katowice final can serve as Exhibit A for two arguments. The first, that CS is the greatest esport of all time. The second, that best-of-five finals are too much of a good thing.
Latest for Dexerto: Esports Twitterati gathered to make sure Carlos paid the ultimate price for his mistake. Question is, where's that energy when it's time to fight the real villains in our industry?
Since as BLAST is the first time we'll get to see Falcons in action at a real tier 1 tournament I figured I'd make something for all their LGBT fans across the world to be able to show their support for their favourite team. Please share. Go Falcons!
Whatever happens for them at this tournament I have a huge respect for this Na'Vi squad. Can't imagine a more difficult set of circumstances to compete under. Win or lose they've shown heart by even turning up.
When I was a host I used to love and encourage heated discussion between my analysts. If this isn't a bit it's one of the single most unprofessional things I've seen happen on a broadcast. Attacking your colleagues credibility and telling them to leave like it's YOUR desk?
Hope that puts to bed all the bullshit about Karrigan being overrated you read on Reddit. He's just won the biggest tournament of the year so far while having to use 3 different line-ups across the tournament.
At least four people were dealing with personal matters that definitely would have all justified people in returning home. We held together as a group to deliver the best show we could for ourselves, the game and the community. You won't know who because they crushed it.
Blown away and humbled by the last 48 hours of generosity and growth. 1300+ Substack Subscribers, 189 Patrons, Discord hit 5000 community members... I've activated everyone's paid Substack subscriptions and will be doing the same for Discord statuses shortly. Thanks to everyone.
An Ars Technica reporter who was lecturing me on the evils of the "OK" gesture has been arrested for allegedly soliciting sex from children because of course.
Out of all the new players I've met this event
@yek1ndar
is one of the nicest. Genuinely loves his CS and jumped at the chance to be in this showmatch. Bright career ahead for him.
Latest for Dexerto: Sources come forward to talk about how Evil Geniuses mishandled their duty of care to a League of Legends prodigy before publicly scrambling to save face.
Latest for Dexerto: After three years and what was one of their strangest bans to begin with, it is my opinion that it is time for Twitch to reverse the ban on Ice Poseidon.
I went to Belgium many times during my esports adventures. A good choice for the CS:GO Major. Here's hoping this is the Major where we see call ups for the great broadcast talent that has nurtured our scene these past few years. Sjokz/Freya hosting duo, Harry/Hugo & Lau/Scrawny.
All joking aside, the news about IEM Katowice having to be played without crowd attendance sucks for everyone who traveled. It's people like this Redditor I feel sorry for.
I wrote this on the day of the news about Sean Gares being pushed into retirement. A lot of people don't understand why Riot Games do the things they do. I do, so let me explain with a little history.
Twitch held its internal all hands meeting just now. Twitch called the negative reaction to simp, incel, and virgin as "the community misunderstanding" and COO Sara Clemens called me out directly for misinterpreting it. that hurts, Sara! wrong, too. we all understand its bad
Netflix sent 400 critics on expensive trips to encourage positive reviews and votes for awards. And you wonder why journalists have spent the past 5 years telling you that asking about "ethics in journalism" is a dogwhistle for something more sinister.
What happened in the NiP vs Anonymo situation is a tale as old as esports itself. A big org pressuring someone to give in to their demands because things didn't go according to their script. Critique Flashpoint for their weakness but it's NiP that exerted that pressure.
Tech reporter Peter Bright, who spent his time online raging against the evil "gamergaters" and people using the OK symbol, has been convicted of attempted enticement of a minor for sex. The usual journalistic clique have been mostly quiet about it. Twitter leaves his account up.
For all the expectations placed on broadcast talent to push back against the Saudi takeover of esports you'll never see players criticised even when they do things like this. The esports industry is irreparably broken.
Great to see s1mple, someone who overcame his own youthful shortcomings to become the best CS player in the world, take the right approach to dealing with racists online. How many would have said nothing and played out the game?
It's been great to hear Pansy's voice on a CS cast again. She was another member of our exceptional broadcast talent pool that was treated awfully by sections of the community. Hope she has more CS work lined up throughout the year and beyond.
Good morning. Still trying to process how it would have been "career suicide" if I had been wrong about the date of CS2 but all the speculative grifters that made videos about me saying that get to be wrong without it hurting their reputation. Can anyone explain how that works?
Latest for Dexerto: Documents show that Heroic created non-disclosure agreement to stop squad talking about cheating or bug use, Heroic management agreed banned coach Hunden "took a bullet" for the squad.
Well done to the IGLs who have stood up to this bullshit Astralis have pulled. Everyone knows it's a lie so they can get more time with their new player. BLAST must be consistent and make Astralis play with their registered lineup otherwise the whole tournament is compromised.
Thank you for the outpouring of support and love. Seeing so many people from across the world speak so highly of Maria has helped me, her grieving family and her boyfriend. She touched many lives, more than I think she realised. Nothing can diminish that.
CS community: Valve don't do operations, have ignored our anniversary and haven't fixed animations.
Valve: Releases an operation in all but name around the anniversary with animations fixed.
CS community: Fuck Valve
You absolute unbelievable babies.
Personally I think everyone crushed the event, especially the debutants, and in the end they helped deliver the moments that matter for the fans. I hope they are given the appreciation they deserve.
ESL Cologne really has been everything I'd hoped it would be and more. Fuck all the greedy assholes who have deprived us of this for the rest of the year. This is what Counter-Strike should be and why it's the greatest esport of all time.
Got contacted about the removal of some disturbing emotes from my Twitch channel. I knew Twitch was becoming a lot more sanitised and sterile these days but this has to be some sort of joke, right?

Remember when esports journalists used to report news instead of starting witch-hunts based on things they imagined? The sad reality is you get more engagement from farming fake outrage than you do from solid work. Today's antics from some of my colleagues are shameful.
Honestly though, the Leena / TSM situation is easily fixed. Riot can simply insist that as long as she remains in her position TSM can't participate in the league. You know, like they've done for other orgs in the past. She resigns, like she should have done prior to this. Done.
