New report on what people in 8 countries think about platforms and the public sphere. We find evidence for ‘platform ambivalence’. People recognise that social, search, etc. have some benefits, but when it comes to politics they also have drawbacks - but they use them anyway.

At the country level, there are differences in the trust trend by media system. In democratic corporatist systems (Northern Europe, parts of Western Europe) trust has not really changed - but it has decreased in all other systems.

Higher trust: Older people, women, those interested in news, and TV news users. Lower trust: university educated, and social media news users. Link between interest in news/TV news use and trust in news is very consistent - present in ~90% of the 333 country-years in the data.

Since 2015 we find that trust in news has decreased very slightly on average, but the picture is mixed. In just over half of countries it has decreased - sometimes by a lot. But in others it has barely changed, or even gone up.
