It was past time to jump ship from this hellsite, so trying life where the sky is bluer. My handle is richardlovesbirds - find me there for occasional lab updates, cool ecology papers and general bird joy.

A record 10 new world warbler species in my pond in middle Georgia today, including the first county Nov records for Yellow-throated and Blackpoll Warblers. Pioneers exploiting novel favorable conditions or discombobulated by a heating planet? Either way a joy to behold up close.

The more studies that come out on neonicotinoids, the more I think that they're our generation's DDT. How much evidence or public outcry will it take to banish them to the history books?

@cenemes It looked exploratory, and it was chased off by a House Finch before it could settle in to feeding. However, after posting this, I heard about a Bay-breasted in Florida doing the same thing. As one of our later migrants it could be a good way to fatten up on cool mornings....

Inspired by some fun conversations about co-migrations & resident-migrant interactions at #AOS24. thought I'd dust off the old Twitter & share some migrant magic at my pond. First up is Warbling Vireo hating on a House Finch - a new yard bird & my 7th vireo species for the yard!

A nasty disease is attacking Georgia shrimp and raising concerns for the fishing industry that relies on them. A recent @UGAEcology Ph.D graduate investigates what contributes to the spread of black gill disease and how to protect coastal fisheries.

Finishing up a wonderful visit to Lund University to learn about the wonders of bird migration from the experts. While here I got to experience the mind-blowing raptor migration at Falsterbo. Here's one of the hundreds of Sparrowhawks terrorizing the songbirds at the lighthouse.
