AI's carbon & water costs are known. But, an immediate toll of AI-- already affecting people's health -- has been largely overlooked. @AdamWierman Our study reveals US data centers could create a $20+ billion public health burden each year in 2030.

The total water is certainly important, but a data center’s peak water demand is a better indicator for the added stress on water infrastructures… Concern the UK's AI ambitions could lead to water shortages ⁦@BBCNews

Most people don’t realize that many of the air pollutants they breathe in come from emission sources located hundreds of miles away… This is what decades of atmospheric research on air dispersion informs us.

This was a conservative estimate (explained in the paper updated in Jan 2025)! If you look at DoE’s prediction, the projection should be much higher!

Global annual water consumption of AI could reach between 4.2 - 6.6 billion cubic meters by 2027, which is roughly equivalent to the annual water usage of Denmark. Is there an AI center in your area that could impact water supply for homes?

NEW: In California, data center builders are erecting DIESEL generators to backstop AI computing. Using a shortcut in regulations, the approved data centers will emit the same GHG as 284,390 cars, including diesel and grid-based electricity emissions.

Interesting...! Data centers report PM2.5, but not carbon, to local environmental authorities for regulation compliance; meanwhile, they report carbon, but not PM2.5, to the public in ESG. Why? (Attached is the annual air pollutant permit for one data center in Virginia.)
