I’m an air traffic controller, so I’m grieving for my brothers and sisters in DC. What happened this week was obviously a tragedy. It irks me deeply that so many people are politicizing this accident, on both sides. Especially from some of our top officials. No, this almost certainly had nothing to do with DEI policies. Likewise, Trump’s EO’s likely did not contribute either. Will they cause issues in the future? Probably, but not this one Mistakes were made, it happens. We’re all human and humans make mistakes. Unfortunately, this time it resulted in the deaths of 67 people. The US airspace system is incredibly safe. So much so, that when an accident of this magnitude happens, it’s huge news. Also, the aviation industry is second to none when it comes to making changes because of accidents and deficiencies. That’s why it is so safe to fly now.. we learn from our mistakes. There is one question that nearly everyone asks when I say that I’m an air traffic controller.. “is your job stressful?” The simple answer is yes. We are tasked with ensuring the safety of hundreds or thousands of people at any given moment while doing so quickly and efficiently, and usually on not enough sleep and constant overtime from being short staffed. But it is the most exciting job, for me at least. We all understand that there is a chance for loss of life anytime we plugged in. But when an accident like this happens, every controller suddenly has that realization pulled to front of your thoughts instead of tucked away neatly somewhere in the back. No controller wants to be the last voice someone hears. To the families of those lost, we grieve with you. To pilots, you’ve lost some of your aviation family. To the military members and veterans, same for you. The country mourns. Let’s not make it worse by throwing our agendas in everyone’s face and pointing fingers. Let’s unite and make flying safer p.s. if you’re looking for a more technical analysis, I may post something like that later or can answer some in the comments.
