A striking reminder that captive African women sometimes gave birth and cared for infants during the Middle Passage: the birthplace of Anne, enslaved in Berbice, is listed here as "At Sea. Lat. unknown."

Two days after final approval, still can’t get an appointment anywhere in Ohio, Kentucky, or Indiana for my son’s COVID vaccine. Last week it was “we can’t schedule until final approval,” and now it’s radio silence or “we haven’t ordered yet.” What a mess. @ImmunizeUnder5s

The salient fact about the British & slavery is not that we practised it (so did every civilisation in history) but that we abolished it. The salient fact about the British Empire was not its existence (it was the universal model) but its largely peaceful & voluntary dismantling.

A few thoughts on this from a historian of slavery in Guyana, FWIW. Part of the problem w/ this language is how a 21st cent. reader understands "manager" or "management"--terms too easily stripped of their brutality and context. (BTW, same problem w/ plantation "attorney")

Hi @TheBookerPrizes , I really appreciate the transparency. The enslaved African people referenced are my family. Josias & George did not "manage" my family. They enslaved them. Thats why we STILL have their last name. They were enslavers, not "managers".
