@elonmusk The disparity between government employees and those it serves are unreal. This is a significant question for congress, why is the government and its employees allowed to conduct business without consequences, when those it serves would be subject to penalty of incarceration?

My patience with the media is gone. We work hard, pay taxes, and live frugally. Now someone is exposing that those we pay taxes to fund frivolous projects and cannot account for our money. Yet, the media attacks the individuals exposing corruption not those who are corrupt. They are worthless.

@elonmusk SMH, this is cringe. "It's ok that we cannot account for what we spent". Imagine if you or I did this for our taxes or if a business did if for their P&L. Off you jail you go. Government needs to be held to the same standards as the people it supposedly serves.

🙂 there are a lot of administrators in this conversation so the responses I see are little warped. When a researcher submits a grant, the institution where the research is to be conducted requests that the granting agency also give the institution $ to cover indirect costs of doing the research such as lab space, utilities, and administrative. It’s usually a percentage of the researchers cost. This is understandable as there is a cost to this. The problem is that these funds are unrestricted, so the institution can do whatever it wants with the money (I.e. a $ drug). Other funds such as State or endowments are ear marked for specific purposes. Like any drug, the user wants more and more. So, the institutions have negotiated with the granting agencies over time to get more. Today, indirect funds are the primary source of funding for most major universities (no, it’s not student tuition). The problem is that institutions have used the funds to grow administration and the monster wants more and more food. What Elon, et al. are pointing out is that in business, the equivalent cost ranges from 5-15%. Business document the cost structure well, so 5-15% is a realistic number. Yet, institutions are charging the equivalent of 40-45% on grants. A significant waste of our $. This is only the surface, a lot more will come up. FYI, most of the responses that defend it are likely administrators. I was on the scientist side of this for many years, it use to chap my ass. After leaving for private industry I realized it was worse than I thought. Glad they are doing something about it.

Yes, Bill Kristol had a historical connection to the Bush family through his role as chief of staff to Vice President Dan Quayle during the George H.W. Bush administration. He was a vocal advocate for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, co-authoring a book with Lawrence F. Kaplan that justified the war and supported the Bush Doctrine. Kristol's influence extended to founding a think tank to promote the invasion and making numerous public appearances to advocate for the removal of Saddam Hussein, predicting a swift conflict resolution. None of that was true, and I believe he knew that. But he got rich, so what does he care? I attended 108 memorial services in 2004-2005 while in Iraq on my first tour. I’ve attended countless more after that, at home and again in Iraq and Afghanistan. I now cannot attend a military funeral or memorial service. I cannot handle it emotionally.
