I'm excited to launch this new @LAist series about young parents in L.A. struggling to find affordable housing big enough for kids. Buying is out of reach for many. Increasingly, so is renting. Is leaving L.A. the only option?

The Los Angeles City Council has again delayed a vote on new eviction protections for tenants who lost jobs in the fires. My @LAist story gets into the heated debate splitting the council, and bringing landlords and tenants out to City Hall in droves.

Collectively, these listings appear to have sought to illegally overcharge tenants by $92.4 million / year. Likely rent gouging wasn't limited to mansions in the hills. Many listings were in Koreatown and South L.A. Get more details in the full story:

Anecdotally, many L.A. landlords seem to think that accepting high offers from people displaced by fires does not count as price gouging. Today, the AG's office clarified: Even in a bidding war, charging more than 10% above pre-fire rates is illegal.

To Monica Vasquez, the families she worked for weren't just employers. “We don’t just go to work and leave... There are people who put their trust in us and make us feel like family." Brian's @LAist story gets into the fire's economic and emotional impact on domestic workers.

The L.A. City Council approved a bunch of emergency responses to the fires today, on topics like prosecuting curfew violators and investigating fire hydrant water pressure. But they delayed a vote on pausing evictions and rent hikes. My report for @LAist:

"My intention was to continue leaving this home to the next generation...But I honestly have to say, this has changed my thought process." You'll want to read — and listen — to this @Erstone7 radio and web story about the Black families who lost Altadena homes in the Eaton Fire.
