Dec 14 2008 - Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi throws his shoes at President Bush in protest at US occupation of Iraq. He shouted "This is a farewell kiss from the Iraqi people, you dog" & "This is for the widows and orphans and all those killed in Iraq" with the second shoe.
Dec 1 1955 – Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat to a white person when the whites-only section was full. Her arrest starts bus boycott that ends racial segregation on buses in US South.

Feb 4 1913 -Birth of Rosa Parks. US civil rights activist who refused to give up her bus seat & sparked mass boycott. "People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true... No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in."
Apr 23 1979 - Death of Blair Peach, a socialist teacher who was killed by the police while demonstrating against the fascist NF in London, UK. 1000s of people followed his coffin to the funeral a few days later.
Jun 28 1969 - Early morning, New York police raided the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, a popular LGBT venue. The attack led to 6 nights of riots & gave birth to a militant movement for gay liberation. Two years later the first Pride march took place in NY on the same date.
July 27 1979 - Birth of Marielle Franco, Rio de Janeiro Councillor, socialist activist, campaigner for "poor black women and people from the favelas" who was assassinated after speaking out against police violence.

May 4 1886 - A bomb explodes during a rally in Haymarket Square, Chicago USA. Four anarchists are hanged for the crime, though they didn't throw the bomb. This event is the origin of May Day as a day of workers' protest.

Aug 12 2017 - Antifascist protester Heather Heyer is killed by a Nazi who drove their car into a crowd of activists protesting against a far-right rally in Charlottesville, USA. Her last social media post read: “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention”.
Dec 29 1890 – US Army massacres 300 Lakota men, women & children at Wounded Knee. Resistance from Native Americans led to 25 US troops being killed. The US Gov awarded 20 Medals of Honour to those who took part in the massacre. It took 100 years for the Gov to "express regret".
Feb 11 1987 - Death of Mark Ashton aged 26. A communist and LGBT+ rights activist he is best known for his work in building Lesbians & Gay Men support the Miners during the year long British miner's strike; depicted in the film Pride.

Sep 22 1918 – Birth of Hans Scholl, who, together with his sister Sophie & several friends, founded the White Rose anti-Nazi group in Munich. In Feb 1943 they were caught by the Gestapo & executed. (Hans on left in photo w/ Sophie & Christoph Probst another member of White Rose)

Dec 6 1849 – Born a slave in Maryland, USA, Harriet Tubman escapes from her owners on this day. She later makes 13 trips to free over 70 other slaves and helps run the "Underground Railroad". Later in life she is a campaigner for women's suffrage.

Jan 30 1972 – Bloody Sunday in Derry. British soldiers gun down 14 unarmed Catholic civil rights marchers; 13 die immediately, and one later. 26 people are injured, many shot in the back. The struggle for justice continues.

Jun 7 2020 - During the Black Lives Matter protests following the murder of George Floyd, protesters in Bristol, UK, topple a statue of Edward Colston, a slave trader and roll it into Bristol Harbour. Four protesters are eventually found "not guilty" of criminal damage by a jury.
Aug 28 1955 - 14 year old Emmett Till tortured & murdered after reportedly flirting with a white woman. His killers were acquitted. Emmett's mother held an open-casket funeral to show the world her son's mutilated body. His death helped encourage Civil Rights movement.
Aug 12 2017 - Anti-fascist Heather Heyer is killed by a Nazi terrorist who drives a car into a crowd protesting the far-right in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA.

Jul 1 1977 – Native American activist Leonard Peltier gets two life sentences for alleged role in death of FBI agents at AIM encampment. Nearly 45 years later the campaign to get his conviction overturned and Peltier released continues:

Aug 18 1977 – Steve Biko, leader of South Africa’s Black Consciousness Movement arrested by Apartheid security police. Tortured and beaten, Biko dies of his injuries in a prison cell on 12 September.
