I am really proud of our paper at CHI 2021 this year. We provide a framework for why privacy enhancing technologies for end-users do not and will not work unless we change how we think about power. It's open access too!
SPICE Researchers @jsseberger @yomarissel @quillis @sameer_patil present at the #CHI2021 on their paper "Empowering Resignation: There's an App for That" looking at application privacy controls and user's ability to have conditional vs true empowerment.

@cfiesler one answer for why roll this out without addressing all of the issues you mentioned? Thinking about all of those points is costly. Roll out like this? Gains in engagement will negate bad publicity, because engagement is all that counts really financially. Ah... capitalism :)

@dawnnafus @giulio_mattioli Ah this is excellent fodder for more of course :). There is also the attitudes change myth - people just don't like change, but future will show. :)

@gillianmsmith It's not about complimentary ethics, it's about changing the very ontological position of computer science. Which means first, we need to understand better how grand ideas (such as privacy or democracy) get translated into formalisms in code. Your thread is awesome :)
