Teacher pay is definitely the issue. You cannot afford a house or rent in my county on a teacher salary. Our new pay scale gives us $500 raises a year. In 20 years you can go from making $40K to $50K. Why would anyone do that?

This is basically the home I grew up in as a boomer in Miami. 5 people in 3 bedrooms. My dad built an addition on the back. And we got AC later. My parents sold it in 1993 for $80k. Zillow has it today at $548k. Ridiculously unaffordable.

We have to do a lockdown drill in our school every semester in case there’s a mass shooter. We had fundraiser to buy tourniquets for every classroom. We had training on how to deal with wounds. None of that was because ov drag shows.

It’s one of the wealthiest counties in the state and the pay is thousands less than surrounding counties. They eliminated merit based pay and now we all get $500 raises per year. When we have to sub during our planning due to shortages, we get paid $10 an hour.
