If I'd had my way the title of would have been this meme. Our case study found that in all cases where QCNNs work (i.e. train and generalize) - they're possible to classically simulate. We set it as a challenge to the community to prove us wrong.

My QHACK is TODAY 12 ET having swapped with @MvsCerezo (thanks a zillion Marco for that ♥️). I'll be talking about what makes a good QNN. (I've been ill so may be a little groggy but will still be fun! And I'm 100% not ashamed to admit that I will be doing it in my slippers.)

Pleased to share some progress in understanding quantum landscapes... We've proven that a special feature of quantum costs is that it's impossible to have a barren plateau without a narrow gorge (or vice versa). For details check out Andrew's nice thread below.

Happy world quantum day! Here is a new paper from my coauthors @qZoeHolmes @MvsCerezo @ColesQuantum and me. We show that for parameterized quantum circuit landscapes barren plateaus and narrow gorges always come hand in hand. Check it out!

The less glamorous side to new faculty life- stranded at an airport for the 4th time this year. Am I unlucky or is it the same for everyone? (I left 2 hours for this connection but a team effort from French air traffic control and @British_Airways still managed to screw me.)

The core idea is that training data formed from the evolution of a system at short times Can be used to train a time dependent quantum neural network Which could be then used to predict the evolution of the system at longer times

This result will make learning/compiling quantum unitaries much easier both classically and on NISQ devices Which has applications in a range of areas from quantum sensing and Hamiltonian learning to dynamical simulation (more on that in a sec) and optimal circuit design

Quantum kernels are often said to enjoy trainability guarantees... in stark contrast to QNNs which famously suffer from Barren Plateaus. Here we show that quantum kernels can in fact face a similar trainability barrier. 👇👇 👇

Kernel methods are famous for their trainability guarantees. But, is this always true for quantum kernel-based models where kernel values are statistically estimated from quantum hardware ? Check out: with @samson_wang , @MvsCerezo and @qZoeHolmes
