It’s been more than a week since the Osage Nation won a massive, massive victory in federal court, with US District Court Judge Jennifer Choe-Graves ruling that @EnelGroup must pay $36M in damages and attorney fees & remove 84 wind turbines in Osage Cty by next December at a cost of $300M — and yet not a single story about the ruling in the @nytimes @washingtonpost @bloomberg or @NPR. Disappointing, but not surprising. Here’s my article, published last Friday, on another platform.

Iris Chang documented the horrific slaughter of Chinese citizens by Japanese troops in her landmark book, The Rape of Nanking. She reminded us, “never forget how lucky you are.” #irischang

What have I learned after 15 years of reporting on land-use conflicts over Big Wind and Big Solar? It’s this: There’s no such thing as a NIMBY. Everyone, everywhere, cares about their homes, their property values, their landscapes, their viewsheds, their cultural histories, and the attractiveness of their neighborhoods. In addition, they care about preserving agricultural land. My latest:

Last month, Ørsted took a $1.7B write down on its offshore wind business. Last month, @Shell took a $1B writedown and said it was quitting the Atlantic Shores project and on Monday, the state of New Jersey cancelled bids for an offshore wind solicitation. All of this is great news for ratepayers, the marine environment, and whales. #wind #windenergy #alternativeenergy #greenenergy #climate #trump #whales #endangeredspecies #newjersey

Whether the facts are screamed from rooftops or made sotto voce, the results are obvious: the offshore and onshore wind sectors are in full-blown panic mode. Trump’s executive orders, particularly the one requiring the federal government to assess the wind industry’s impact on wildlife — have had an immediate and chilling effect on wind projects onshore and offshore. My latest:

Today, skyscrapers are ubiquitous. They are so common, it's easy to forget the technology that makes them possible. Before Frank Sprague perfected the electric elevator at the Postal Telegraph Building at 253 Broadway, only a handful of buildings in New York City (and other cities) stood more than four or five stories tall. But after 1894, when the PTB was completed, the vertical city took off. As Jesse Ausubel notes, electricity and electric elevators, "completely transformed the structure, the geography the geometry of cities.” Check out my latest piece on Subs**ck: Frank Sprague: America’s Greatest, Least-Known Inventor

By completing the system in Richmond, Sprague had designed, built, and successfully deployed, the world’s first full-scale commercial electric railway. His success in Richmond helped fuel the deployment of similar systems all over the world. Not only that, the designs that Sprague developed for the Richmond system — including the way he attached his motors to the axles and truck frames of the railcars — would become the standard design for electric trolley and rail systems around the world. Frank Sprague was a titan of the Electric Age. He perfected the electric motor, electric streetcar, and electric elevator. In doing so, he changed the shape and size of our cities. Further, many of the technologies he pioneered, including multi-unit control systems on electric railways, are still in use today. Despite his myriad accomplishments, few people know his name. Please read my piece on Frank Sprague, America’s greatest, least-known inventor. You can find it on Sub**ack

AI and energy stocks got hammered yesterday after a Chinese AI company, @deepseek_ai, released a new free AI model. @nvidia's market cap fell by $465B in one day. Nat gas stocks, pipeline stocks, & SMR stocks all got clobbered. It appears investors decided there’s been to much irrational exuberance about AI. #ai #alternativeenergy #greenenergy #smr #artificialintelligence #natgas #climate #climatechange
