@rtk254 We didn't want to argue that subscription fees were the only valid signal, but probably not altmetrics, that's too distal. It's a bit of a hedge, since we didn't have obvious ideas for this, but we're pretty sure other indicators are possible.

Our results are troubling, because parochialism can also lead to the dehumanization of outgroups and a stubborn failure to avert existential threats. We think an examination of the conditions under which it is adaptive is an important step toward figuring out ways to mitigate it.
