The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat were represented among the 200 participants from nearly 100 countries and organizations at the Polar Maritime Seminar in London – critical discussions aimed at enhancing safety and sustainability in Arctic and Antarctic shipping.

EU funding opens opportunities for digital infrastructure and research in the Arctic Polar Connect is an initiative that establishes a sustainable and reliable data connection between Europe and Asia along a new route via the Arctic Ocean. Now, the European Commission is granting 40 MSEK in funding for Polar Connect's next sub-project. How researchers will benefit from the project The work of mapping the seabed of the Arctic is an opportunity for researchers to increase their understanding of the seabed of the Arctic, in particular areas such as the Lomonosov Ridge, the Alpha Ridge, and the Gakkel Ridge. Researchers will be able to engage in the project by participating in the discussion of what data from the seabed of the Arctic can be useful to them. In this way, they can take part in influencing the manufacture of cables and sensors, and contribute to Polar Connect with a research perspective. The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat has been granted the EU funds together with @Vetenskapsradet, @nordunet, the Technical University of Denmark, and GlobalConnect. Read more:

@IASC_Arctic is now accepting proposals for consideration for IASC funding in 2025 until 6 January 2025 at 13:00 GMT. The funding is provided by the five IASC Working Groups (WGs): Atmosphere, Cryosphere, Marine, Social & Human, Terrestrial. It is aimed at encouraging and supporting science-led international programmes by offering opportunities for planning and coordination, and by facilitating communication and access to facilities.
