MORE: Cardy's two-page resignation letter to Higgs is absolutely stunning, one of the most remarkable things I've read in New Brunswick politics. "Wrecking ball." "Consolidation of power in your own hands." "Data my ass."
BIG: NB Premier Higgs says voters have spoken on federal carbon tax & he will look at crafting a made-in-NB carbon price on consumers that complies with Trudeau climate plan and can replace Ottawa’s backstop.
Huge crowd of the curious and the committed packed into this Fredericton home this afternoon to get a look at Conservative leader candidate Pierre Poilievre.
NEW from me: the premier's weekend tweets linking Susan Holt to Justin Trudeau on Policy 713 resemble a tactic used in the past by a Regina-based political consultant who's been advising Higgs since April.
Coming this week: after a year-long CBC/Radio-Canada investigation,
@fredericzalac
& I reveal previously-secret details about Irvings companies in Bermuda.
If I were in the office today, I'd find a way to oh-so-casually mention to my colleagues that it'll be 20 years ago tomorrow that I joined the CBC to cover New Brunswick politics. In a constantly changing media and political environment, I've never regretted it for a moment.
NEW: in an October 2021 letter obtained by CBC News, PC MLA Dorothy Shephard told Premier Blaine Higgs that his lack of trust in ministers and civil servants was paralysing decision-making. “Your reckless and arbitrary conduct has destroyed a team that could make your success.”
This is Margaret Isaacs, CBC NB’s media librarian who is retiring today. When we need old footage to show how things have changed (or haven’t), it’s Margaret who finds it. She does many other important things too, always with a good-natured smile.
Dorothy Shephard tells Information Morning Saint John she wrote a 6-page letter to Higgs in October 2021 urging him to change his management style & got no productive response. She says she can’t see herself running in 2024 if he’s still PC leader.
Cameraman Joe McDonald is retiring from the CBC today. Joe made us all look good and also helped with interviewing from time to time, tossing in a pointed question at the end that often yielded the most interesting answer of all. Wish Joe a great retirement.
A former party leader who was ousted after senior caucus members abandoned him apparently believes it’s not news when senior cabinet members abandon their leader.
@CBCNews
will not rest until
@PremierHiggs
is gone. Canadians support LGBT rights. But bully tactics from radical LGBTs is eroding that respect.This is ALL about parents’ rights to advise their own children.NB MLAs need to stand up on that point.
Please wish a happy retirement to
@connellcbc
. Today's his last day. One of the calmest, kindest reporters around, Connell's always been willing to decode Saint John politics for me. It was never about him, but always about the story.
More turmoil within the PCs: Hampton candidate withdraws, quits party; another member slams social-conservative messaging & urges Higgs to change course.
NEW: Wolastoqey chiefs in New Brunswick are shifting their land claim case to pursue the province’s largest forestry companies in a bid to reclaim title to much of their traditional territory.
🚨🚨🚨 PC Environment Minister Gary Crossman quits cabinet, will step down soon as Hampton MLA. “My personal and political beliefs no longer align in many ways with the direction of our party and government.”
Invitations are out for a Feb. 17 event where Susan Holt of Fredericton will unveil "her fresh approach to leadership and politics as she campaigns to become the first female Liberal leader, and first female Premier for New Brunswick." She'll be the 5th declared candidate.
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association says it has filed its lawsuit against the government of New Brunswick on funding for abortions at Fredericton's Clinic 554.
Just minutes after Green leader David Coon predicted the PC rebellion wasn't over, Tory Andrea Anderson-Mason slams government bill limiting powers of anglophone district education councils. Says it eliminates local control, contradicting Higgs on parents' roles.
New Brunswick rarely wins at anything but is poised to reach the pandemic-containment podium. Tomorrow I have a story looking at the many factors that may have got us there.
I don't normally do events like this, but I couldn't say no to teachers working on a new Grade 10 civics course coming next year. I talked about: misinformation, online echo chambers, polarization, loss of nuance, cynicism re: institutions & why mainstream media still matter.
This week we hosted our 3rd
@ASD_West
Civic Education workshop at the Fredericton Ed Centre. A big thank you to our guest speaker
@poitrasCBC
for sharing his insights about democratic engagement to launch our evening. Another great event! One more to go in Oromocto.
After four incredible years working as Minister of Education and Early Childhood Education I have submitted my resignation to Premier Higgs. I look forward to continuing as PC member for Fredericton West-Hanwell. At some point, working style and values have to matter. More soon.
21 Acadian and francophone organizations, including business & arts groups, unions, and associations for seniors, women, youth & others are demanding Kris Austin’s removal from a committee of PC MLAs looking at updating the Official Languages Act.
Tomorrow on
@CBCNB

FACTS: The last time the Habs made the final, Brian Mulroney was the prime minister of Canada, Carey Price was five years old and
@seguincbc
was a host at CBC New Brunswick.
Holder's resignation is a big deal. He's the longest-serving MLA in the legislature and has been in the cabinet of three PC premiers. He's never been about the drama. Until last week he's been a loyal soldier, at least publicly: the ultimate party stalwart.
Asked on
@infoamfred
about a listener suggestion he raise taxes on the “super-wealthy” such as the Irvings, Premier Higgs says the tax agreements with First Nations were creating “super-wealthy” reserves to the detriment of non-Indigenous New Brunswickers.

Premier Blaine Higgs confirms mandatory vaccination rules will be put in place for all provincial public sector workplaces as well as provincially regulated facilities such as nursing homes. Unvaccinated staff will be subject to COVID testing.
Not only is this the lowest number of active cases since Oct. 6, this is also the first time New Brunswick has reported no new cases for two days in a row since Remembrance Day.

NEW: Premier Blaine Higgs says he's open to the idea of adopting Daylight Savings Time year-round if Ontario and Quebec go that route. "I think it's a golden opportunity for us to do the same thing."
Yesterday I received 543 emails and calls asking my advice on how to get out of this pandemic. Get vaccinated! Take the first one available. These articles on AstraZeneca are doing a great disservice to the public. Meanwhile the media hope to renew Covid coverage for a 4th wave
Kassim Boumbia gagne son pari et devient maire de Shippagan.
