Very excited to be a winner @MHPC 😃 Two months ago I was asked to write a short piece about counterfeit stamps. It quickly turned into a far deeper investigation. I’m grateful for all the support I had from editors to keep digging and proud of the changes we brought about.

@oldishbird1 The gov’s increase in CEA by 12.5pc does not fully absorb the VAT levy. Assuming a 14pc increase in fees, British military family are paying £2,500 more in avg boarding school fees even with the CEA uplift. Treasury and MoD knew raising CEA was not the same as an exemption.

@shayshrewsbury Shay I completely agree with you. Reeves and Treasury know this as well. But it hasn’t stopped them selling it to the public as a tax that is ring-fenced to improve state schools because it’s a vote winner.

@clandest_ine But if by that you mean schools like Eton and Winchester, this policy allows them to reclaim millions in historic VAT.

Having covered this story almost every day for 7 months and spoken to hundreds of parents and headteachers, I’ve no idea how the Treasury calculated a 10pc increase in fees. Great work from @bienbutcher to show this figure is far from the reality.
