Day one of restored car access to the #PhoenixPark . The side gates are open to cars less than twelve hours and this is what's going on in a space that was calmly car-free just yesterday. This is why we can't have nice things, evidently.

Finally closed a bad tax loophole in Dublin City Council’s budget tonight. For years, commercial landlords got a 50% rates tax cut if their property was vacant. A totally perverse incentive. It took 3 years of gradual reductions, but the “vacancy refund” is finally gone. 🙌

Two years today, I got solar power. Since then, the house has generated more electricity than it's used. ⚡ used: 3,400kWh ⚡ generated: 3,452kWh Even in overcast Ireland, on a 1920s terraced house, seven panels makes more than we need. Amazing.

Surely the lesson of 2020 is just how important public services are to our city. This shouldn't be yet another year where Dublin City Council cuts taxes for the wealthy at the expense of public services, yet that's exactly how the vote tonight went: 34 to 21. Here's my speech:

34-21, Dublin City Council votes to cut property tax again. To disprortionately benefit wealthy homeowners, the tax will mean €12m less for the council's funds. We're already facing a €39m deficit thanks to COVID - we didn't need this on top of it.

Good to see VRT change in #Budget2021 . SUVs are a pox and should be far more expensive relative to other cars. In 2013, under 1 in 5 new cars were SUVs. By 2019, nearly HALF of new cars were SUVs. That has to change. And tax is the way to do it. Good stuff.

Bizarre headline. A rush-hour Dublin Bus has an average 53 passengers. 2-3 cars would take up the same roadspace, but with an average 4 passengers. A bus moves way more people: that's why they should get priority. Not "anti-car", just basic maths!
