“I just knew if he were right today, he’d be too strong.” On Sunday, tough-as-guts galloper Direct Fire, ridden by Amy McLucas, showcased his determination when holding on for a memorable victory in the $80,000 Bega Cup at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club. The victory earned the Theresa Bateup-trained 4YO his shot at glory in the $3 million Big Dance, which will be run and won at Royal Randwick on the first Tuesday in November. Story ⬇️

“Pop trained a few winners at Quirindi, and Dad’s trained over 800 winners, so it would be a nice thrill to get the monkey off the back." The Lee family name is firmly established in racing, and young Ballina-based trainer Jordan Lee wants to continue that tradition. It was a one-act affair in the last at Tumbarumba, with The Cuban putting a huge margin on his rivals in the 1400m Class 2 Handicap. The result also brought up a winning double for Dan McCarthy and Justin Stanley, and a fifth win for Wangaratta trainers on the Southern Districts program.

Wangaratta trainer Dan McCarthy landed a good win at Tumbarumba, with Dilution too good in the 1200m Class One Handicap. It was a top ride by Justin Stanley, who made every post a winner on the speedy 4YO.

The first on the card at Tumbarumba was the 1020m BM45 Handicap, won by the Gary Colvin-trained and Carly Frater-ridden Superstruck, which led all the way. It's a beautiful day for racing in the Snowy Mountains.

Todd Smart has had a phenomenal run of results stretching back to June last year, with 11 winners from his past 50 starters, including five from his past nine. @emkguymer @reith_christian 100% agree. They're athletes in a dangerous sport. Still, other jockeys have messaged us and disagree with the sentiment in the original post because it appears targeted. Just seems like the poor kid is now a punching bag.
