I've never heard of saline IVs absorbing drugs but it's absolutely possible. Perhaps it helps dilute the drug concentration(s) in the blood thus weakening the overdose.

Medics may need to administer multiple doses and people still die. Fentanyl is one of the only common opioids strong enough to displace buprenorphine (Suboxone) off the mu- receptor.
