The Chronicle of Philanthropy is tracking layoffs and closures in the nonprofit sector directly related to the federal funding freeze. If you have been laid off or have witnessed layoffs, program cuts, or closures due to changes in federal funding, please comment below. Please comment only if your organization — or an organization on which your nonprofit financially depends — has been receiving federal grants. We're interested in as much detail as is possible to share, such as the number of people affected, the annual budget of your program/nonprofit, its cause area(s), and ripple effects in terms of populations/programs served. If you prefer to share the details privately, please email Tamara Straus, senior editor, at tamara.straus@philanthropy.com.

Government funding makes up about 33% of the revenue flowing into the nonprofit sector annually. A long freeze on federal grants and contracts would be devastating for nonprofits and the communities they serve.

When is a charity not so charitable? Journalist Bobbi Dempsey writes a personal essay for #TheCommons about growing up in poverty and encountering food banks and other social service organizations that wanted her family to "perform" their pain in order to prove they were worthy of support. Dempsey outlines ways that groups can address stereotypes that staff hold about the people in poverty even as they try to help them. Read the essay at: We're grateful to the @econhardship, a partner on this story.

A new coalition of nonprofits came together overnight to challenge a seemingly sweeping order from the Trump administration last week pausing trillions of dollars in federal funding. They succeeded in blocking that order, at least for now. It's the start of what nonprofits expect will be a deluge of court actions, as civil litigation promises to be a powerful tool civil society groups plan to use to push back on President Donald Trump’s policies.
