During #BlackHistoryMonth , we’d like to acknowledge Hugh Mason Browne (1851–1923), who invented a machine that trapped sewer water and stopped it from flowing back into a house. We use this sort of device in Pittsburgh, called a backflow preventer, to this day!

We surpassed the state requirement to remove 1,341 lead service lines by June 30. But we’re not slowing down! Our crews are continuing to offer full lead line replacements across the city.

PWSA’s work on Smallman Street is nearing conclusion. Remaining sewer construction is nearly 90% complete, with final completion expected in February. This was PWSA largest single water and sewer project to-date.

Today, the City of Pittsburgh will begin repaving the walkway around the Highland I Reservoir. This is the final step to complete the restoration of the parapet wall around the reservoir. The walkway will fully reopen once paving is complete.

Did you know? Many streams meander and have curves to naturally slow the water. Saw Mill Run is a straight channel causing water to travel at a faster rate. Adding boulders and vegetation will slow down fast-moving waters and stabilize the banks

Here is a section of the 16" water main that split early this morning on Brighton Rd. This pipe was installed 97 years ago! We're working to replace our aging water mains before they cause the kind of destruction we saw today, but it takes time and resources from ratepayers.

Latest testing shows our lead levels are below the action level. We’re pleased that the latest results are trending downward, we won't rest until we improve our water treatment using orthophosphate and replace the lead lines in our system.

UPDATE: Crews have shut water for 20" main repair on Centre (Negley - Highland) until further notice. Street closed to traffic (and foot traffic) until further notice. Pressure is restored to all other areas of the East End. Water buffaloes are marked on map as red dots.
