While I was in India, I did something I hadn’t done in a very long time—I took pen to paper and wrote my mom a letter. As I wrote, I reflected on how much India, and I, have changed over the years. The last time I wrote a letter to my mom was 20 years ago, when I was accepted into Rice University. In that letter, I thanked her for her patience as I figured out my purpose and shared with her that I had finally found my way. That moment marked a turning point in my life. It was the beginning of a journey that not only shaped my career but transformed me as a person. Returning to India— not just as someone visiting home, but as an officer of the very university that gave me a safe harbor so many years ago—reawakened a deep sense of gratitude in me. Rice gave me the opportunity to pull myself up and out of where I was. It didn’t just open doors to a career; it reshaped me entirely—broadening my worldview and helping me understand the value of curiosity, resilience, and meaningful connections within a tight-knit community of dreamers, thinkers, and doers. While in India, I was struck by the remarkable growth all around me—new industries, new opportunities, and new energy. But just as India has grown, I’ve been reflecting on my own growth since that pivotal moment when higher education became my pathway to a better life. Education, when done right, has the power to transform lives—not just economically, but personally. It makes us better citizens, better leaders, and better humans. As I finished the letter to my mom, I realized it wasn’t just about saying thank you. It was about acknowledging the profound impact of pivotal moments like these—the decisions to pursue something bigger than ourselves—and how they ripple outward, changing lives for generations. Higher education is so much more than degrees and jobs. It’s about empowerment, transformation, and growth. It’s about lifting people up so they can not only reach their potential but also help others along the way. And for that, I’ll always be grateful...... Tonight, I’m heading back to India for the first time in over two decades — 4 cities in 5 days: Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Delhi! This moment feels unexpectedly emotional, stirring memories of my long and winding journey from India to West Virginia and Kentucky, and now at @RiceUniversity. Born in India, I spent part of my early childhood there, with my parents ensuring we made annual trips back. Those visits—and the family ties they nurtured—instilled a deep connection to my roots and a lasting sense of identity. Now, I’m coming full circle to engage with a vibrant community of thinkers, dreamers, and doers as a member of a large delegation from Rice leadership. I’m excited to learn from their journeys, share ideas, and explore how we can build bridges between India’s aspirations and the work we’re driving at Rice and Houston.
