Uncanny light permeating the woodland valley bottom. This is one of 3 substantial woods within a 15 minute walk from our house. It's the one nearest busy roads & vast utilities infrastructure and associated noise but also the spookiest, even in early summer.

He's had a bath & a scrub. Made from a light porous concrete cast. We think the old shrub bed was planted in the late 70s early 80s. Quite a bit of wear on nose & cheek so maybe been in the ground a fair few years. He'll be staying at our house now👍

Top tip: don't go to see the ancient Christian carved stones at Kirkmadrine on an afternoon of blazing sunlight, you won't be able to make out the inscriptions, let alone get to take any decent pics. This was the most important early Christian site in 5th/6th century Galloway

Yesterday I checked on a failed wildflower area that I reseeded in early May. Good mix of species, but dock, bramble & bindweed recolonising, so I spot sprayed & cut back. None of the residents seemed too bothered about picking the apples, plums & pears which were just dropping

Until the 16th century this was another local wood famed for its high quality oak timber that was sent by barge down river, used mostly for church buildings including Lichfield & Lincoln cathedrals. Now it's mostly sycamore & ash.

Ancient hedge ditch & bank remnants, including hawthorn & oak. This is summer pasture, so the bluebells are still able to flower & thrive along the ghost line, as they likely did for the many hundreds of years the hedge was maintained & in use.

What fascinated me the most was the remains of a garden utilising the large rocks around the site. Clumps of flag iris, ornamental grasses & Sedum still thriving amongst batteted cherry trees & rhododendron. Stone steps still visible. 🧵8.

By the point where the old Roman Road from Trimontium to Bremenium diverted suddenly at an angle as it crossed the River Coquet there is a copse of ancient trees just to the north of the tiny village of Holystone 2.

I spent part of this week getting empty 'void' properties fit for human habitation. The garden bits, that is. Several gardens were just used as extra bin space. Here, the tenants emptied what they didn't want out of the windows before they left.

Easily in my top 5 of trees. If I was King of Mercia I'd insist on all remnant ancient hedges & hedge gaps replanted with hawthorn, & standing copses created with hazel, etc instead of shitty municipal/car park species.

Probably after experiencing such modern wonders such as running water & electricity, the family never moved back in after it was decommissioned in 1946. There was nothing spooky or unpleasant about the place when we wandered the old grounds, quite the opposite. 🧵7.

18th century grave stones & other remnants in Kirkcolm Old Kirkyard. The old kirk was demolished in the early 1800s. I think the fact this Kirkyard is round & the old kirk sat on a mound is likely evidence how ancient this site is.

Blawearie was taken over by the War Dept. in 1940 & the family relocated elsewhere. After 1941 it was of little use for the military & left empty, starting its decline. 🧵6.
