Family/friends abroad ask,"How has India kept deaths so low?"
Now they'll ask" How has India managed this countrywide vaccination drive?"
I tell them, "India is argumentative, noisy, bumbling and chaotic. But in any national or state crisis its response is 💯/💯!!
I have spent some 12 years in the allopathic health sector (albeit as a senior civil servant,) and another 6 years studying and administering Ayurveda and Indian systems of medicine. I share some features of Ayurveda both good and bad.
1. There can be no further proof of
Modern medicine is regulated by strict laws, where a doctor is not permitted to promise 100% cure. Moreover, can one person specialize in treating diseases of multiple organ systems? Do any of the laws apply to Ayurvedic practice?

There is talk of age of marriage to be pushed up from 18 to 21 for girls.Fantastic! This will have enormous impact on population stabilization, women's health, nourishment, literacy/education besides maternal and infant mortality.
It should've been done decades ago!
Seeing many critical comments on this initiative. Why Gujarat? Why Jamnagar? What is Tedros trying to achieve?
As former Secretary Ayush (1999-2002) recall how difficult it was to get WHO to take notice.
Freebie : “Something given without having to pay for it, especially as a way of attracting support for or interest in something.”
Welfare : “Designed to promote well-being of disadvantaged social groups.”
I was once on cribbing and kvetching terms with Arun Jaitley. He became a Minister.I retired. We lost touch. But in 1997 he defended me in Delhi High Court when I was being falsely targeted. He won the order I badly needed and charged 0 fees! I now pray for him.
Raghav Chadha gave fulsome praise to IAS officers who "didn't sleep for nights on end as they worked to manage COVID".Much maligned by everyone in the land, when all is said and done, it is the IAS officers who deliver in times of crisis.
@IASassociation
Wwonderful news about Dr Gagandeep Kang! Very proud of this great achievement.Everyone at THSTI will indeed feel proud of her achievement- and as a woman scientist doubly so!Congratulations!
@iUtkarshNeil
Touching story but disappointed that you’re still doing the UPSC thing. My sincere advice: Go for anything you are good at. Take a few courses in areas in high demand and where you have the aptitude.Earn on-line. Get a life! Dump UPSC.
Indeed this can change things! Also set up wetlands at the mouth of big drains in Delhi emptying sewage into the Yamuna. It'll help oxygenate a dying river.Najafgarh,Shadara +Supplementary drains carry 80% Delhi's filth into river.
Iam glad the 54 year old MCI Act is dead and gone. It's good riddance to years of manipulative governance.
I hope the new Act ushers inba new climate of showing concern for the public needs in making the syllabus and preparing ddoctors! Great achievement!
My mother lived to be 102. At the end of some days she'd say,"Nice day." Such a day had 3 ingredients: 6 grandkids -toddlers to teenagers congregating in her room;being challenged and winning a tough game of scrabble; samosas and gulab jamun for tea.Simple.
Ultimately in any crisis our IAS + other officers, engineers and doctors perform miracles. How come? Because a single line of command and control takes over and politics becomes irrelevant! I pray the rescue and relief operations succeed.
Kudos to thousands of kerala govt district admin, police and other personnel who have been with the people on the ground 24×7 providing them relief care and support till situation improves. Their families too are flood affected.
Proud of our unsung unseen heros.

This must be read by all our pundits before locking us all up once more. It takes nothing to snap a lock. It takes intelligence and courage to show discernment bolstered by caution.
And they have nothing like India's population density ! I ascribe it to strong administrative and municipal systems -which however only function in a crisis. The officials possess enormous local knowledge which helps.
Gr8! Italy reported 1st

case one day after India.USA had 1st case 9 days before India. On Day 46,Italy was 1300 times India’s daily no of cases.India & USA reported same no of cases on Day 40.On Day 65,US daily cases were 25 times India’s cases.India consistently lower👍
Supreme Court has reiterated well- known principles which were mostly acted upon from 1993 -2015.The amended Business Rules (2015) followed by High Court judgement (2016 ) circumscribed the elected Government’s powers.Status-quo-ante has been restored.QED.
WHO Geneva for decades had no time for Ayurveda.Chinese medicine dominated traditional medicine in Geneva. So Tedros’ presence at the inauguration speaks volumes and whatever he hopes to gain thereby, it’ll give Indian medicine and medical pluralism a boost. Why Gujarat?
You own a nice house,a great car(s),your kids go to the best schools and your job is secure. Your kids learn to paint, dance, swim, play cricket, football and badminton. But if you can't give them clean air all else is worthless.Happy children's day!
What is more shameful than this that all schools in our capital city are closed on

Former Cabinet Secretary TSR Subramanian’s death is big loss.He successfully spearheaded and won TSR and ors vs UOI case in Supreme Court.Had razor sharp mind and impatience to care.Few IAS Officers shared his love and ability to speak up in public.
Needless controversy on WHO Covid mortality data vs.RGI data. RGI collects/compiles mortality data according to a decades old system.WHO’s allegations are tantamount to saying Indian states /RGI are in cahoots in data suppression. No Indian state/citizen will accept this canard.
Jamnagar, was the seat of oriental studies and belonged to the princely state of Nawanagar. In the 40s Dr P.M. Mehta the court physician (trained in western medicine) proposed that the royal family establish a center for Ayurvedic Studies at Jamnagar.
Media channels asking my views on how authorities are dealing with Carona virus.I
spoke to EMR Director Dr Ravindran and Dr.Rohit at Airport Health.Impressed with their professionalism +transparency. Our health surveillance +epidemic responsivesss is👍.Give credit where due!
Here's Captain Roopa who flew my AI plane from Bengaluru to Delhi last night.I liked her crisp voice and professional update. More the personal touch she gave by acknowledging her 1st officer.I said so on a paper scrap! She invited me to meet her on landing!👍🏼
Indonesia, DPR Korea, Sri Lanka, Nepal and even Thailand use traditional medicine widely. It will be great if countries come together to share knowledge and practice. The goal should be to benefit the public though medical pluralism, nuture soft diplomacy+ boost medical tourism.
Why is no one from Health Ministry clarifying need to have a US based management called BCG group advising the Ministry on COVID management? Panelists are very critical and are questioning the move when India has good epidemiologists and bio- statisticians on call.
I have visited that palatial, circular building many times. It is majestic, is already a University and because of its character and long history is a great place to locate the International Centre for Traditional Medicine.
Anil Swarup ( IAS retd)is patiently explaining why humanitarianism and compassion cannot extend the returning medical students seats in Indian medical colleges. Unfortunately News X anchor is clueless about how medical colleges are run or the cut-throat completion involved.
Giving free services to the middle class is retrograde because they can and should pay for utilities and for public transport. In Delhi lakhs of families on a double income, owning two cars and eating in restaurants pay zero for water/sewerage.
India must showcase what it has without showing off to other countries who have nothing of India's prowess in traditional medicine. We need to be visionaries,to help other countries to mould their systems for greater public benefit and to stay humble.
> on International Traditional medicine centre:No other country has India's repository of original manuscripts,(in Jamnagar), so many codified systems, colleges, dispensaries+drug manufacturers for Ayurveda,Unani, Siddha, medicine besides drugless therapies like Yoga & naturopathy.
India adopts a public health approach to epidemic control. Every household/ community is combed through if there’s a clue. But tracking / checking thousands of physical contacts from the Nizamuddin congregation will need superhuman tenacity. Blessed that we’ve people doing it!
Story of India's first woman IAS officer. She was a no nonsense person and the very first to break the glass ceiling for women officers to follow.Never one to say " I have a problem.."RIP.
My FB group sent this pic of Captain Monica Khanna, the pilot in command of the SpiceJet flight SG723 which she landed safely at Patna airport after an engine fire soon after take off. So proud!

Which claim is ridiculous? I have seen the therapeutic effectiveness of Ayurveda for certain health conditions. If people feel better, in conditions like joint pain, sluggish appetite, skin problems like psoriasis or even mental health problems and panchakarma, shirodhara or some
Appalled at the gloomy picture and misplaced comparisons in articles appearing in foreign media. The reportage +opinions sadly lack knowledge of state/district and sub-district level COVID management in India.Wish had opportunity to write.

As COVID spreads to towns, talukas and villages, patients will be first taken to unqualified medical practitioners or private nursing homes.Normally only 20% go to PHCs. During COVID it is critical to deploy free Ambulances to rush patients to district hospitals.
My memories as I walked through Lodhi Gardens today! Age 9:Stung by angry wasps;Age 30 :Striding 1.9 kms in 17 minutes.Age 35- 45: Watching my kids graduate from rompers onto bicycles.Age 50-60: Sunday evening Hi's & Bye's to endless acquaintances. Today:I walk alone.
Cleaning Ganga/Yamuna should start bottom up.Fine households/close industries discharging sewage/ industrial effluent into drains.Large STPs /CETPs R very costly. Instead, mandate decentralised STPs.Can be done.Needed :courage to become unpopular.
When we pick up our morning newspapers and watch really breaking news on TV, we need to applaud the editors, producers, reporters and back-end media staff with silent salutes ! We can manage without human company or house cleaning but not to get news is fatal!
Privatization of DISCOMS in UTs is a small beginning. Delhi did it in 2002 and it's been a success. But except Delhi, rest of UTs are tiny! Need to incentivise all states to privatise distribution of electricity.
A tiny minority refuses to buckle, gets tossed around, retires honourably into obscurity. They watch peers and even subordinates flying flags.Their rewards are self respect, setting an example for kids and always -a good night's sleep.Worth it!
Historic! AGMUT cadre expanded to additionally serve J&K and the new UTs.Having served in Manipur, Andaman & Nicobar islands, Goa and Delhi and shared the experiences of a spouse posted in Daman, Diu,DNH, Arunachal Pradesh and Chandigarh, can say," what an opportunity!"

The scenes at Kempti Falls, Shimla and Dharamshala spell disaster.Under NDMA / SDMA states can regulate entry and exit and levy huge fines for mask defiance. How can thousands of holidaymakers be allowed to let off steam at the expense of lakhs 'n lakhs of defenceless citizens?

My article today on the WHO's and other academic efforts to project Covid deaths in India.
Might lose friends and make enemies but it has to be said and read!
Rajasthan achieves 70% recovery rate ! Listening to Dr Raghu Sharma the state Health Minister as he reels out facts, figures strategies used, facilities established down to decimal points! His grip on everything was so reassuring. No generalities. No sermons!
I mostly need just one tiny corner to enjoy the leisure I have earned! My simple joys of modern life include a reclining couch, comfy cushions, phone, two I-Pads,mini Bluetooth amplifier, ear plugs, plenty of sockets and the occasional book! My world is thus “sublimely content”.
Well said! Most farmers are rich blokes. Most cultivated are still living in mud and semi pucca huts and owning just a buffalo. They badly need to be lifted out of a dead end life and helped to form cooperatives.
Whether it is loan waivers, farm loans or crop insurance what we need is to outline difference between a
#Cultivator
and a
#Farmer
. Not all farmers are cultivators. But all cultivators need support. Farmer is a legal definition, cultivator is more closer to the profession.
@thallukrish
It is impossible because you cannot have a standard prescription or dosage as the constitution of each individual requires adjustment of medication and a combination of therapy - custom built for that person.
Shocking revelation about medical devices implanted in Indians’arteries, breasts, knees, thighs and more. BADLY NEEDED :An independent REGULATOR and a MEDICAL TRIBUNAL completely separate from the Drugs Controller and Consumer Act.

This article on India written by a Pakistani journalist in a Paki newspaper has warmed the cockles of my heart. The supporting facts and figures are impressive too! To be praised thus is completely unexpected and heartwarming on this cold January evening !
DJB has no incentive to make the undertaking commercially viable because they get paid anyhow. That makes them uncompetitive and with no appetite for better maintenance, early completion of projects and charging polluters. SC’s Polluter Must Pay principle has been thwarted.

I just made the 5000 benchmark! Thanks to everyone for deciding to follow me! Where but on Twitter can I say what I want, whenever I want and get liked, questioned, slammed back in seconds? Flitting like a butterfly across everything that interests me,it's been a joy!🦋🦋
Amit Shah meeting brings huge relief to COVID management in Delhi. Until now city was bumbling away and making everyone’s blood boil. Absence of foresight, direction and co-ordination were so evident.Delhi deserved better months earlier ! At least now get on with the job!
That’s my grandson’s lego model of Arjuna’s chariot being pulled by a horse with Krishna as the charioteer.(Note K’s blue head.)The kid couldn’t find a bow but Arjun has an arrow!( Jasper Bal lives in Canada and is 7.)
I am delighted with NMC Bill coming up in Parliament on Monday. It overthrows the wooden headed and often elitist (and corrupt) MCI; makes quackery- a hitherto non- cognizabble offence into one punishable with imprisonment.
A delightful read !Vir Singhvi gives little known trivia about Air India’s bosses making it nice and gossipy. Generations of Indians are eagerly looking forward to its metamorphosis.

Spent years handling health sector strikes. The problem always snowballs. Politicians /bureucracies end up eating crow. Lesson: Negotiate back normalcy quickly or face patient wrath and 24x7 negative media coverage which will force a climb down.
60% of water bill of Delhi citizens is for sewerage services. So even if you use less water why should sewage treatment be free? Should people living in Category A,Band C colonies be getting their shit carried away and treated for free?
PM mentioned population "explosion" in ID address. The states responsible are UP,BH,CHG,JKD,MP,RJ, ASM. Rest of country has achieved ideal fertility rate of 2.1.Many have European levels of fertility and a declining population.
Glad these figures are in black &white.SJH docs told me it is pathetic to see 4 year olds in a queue waiting for rabies shots after being bitten by strays. MCD must stop this stray dog colonization of neighborhoods.Animal Welfare Board has no jurisdiction - falsely usurped!
Single ration card strategy of SC needed during lockdown. But what about thereafter? For decades migrants have swarmed cities- some 1000 migrants disembark at Old Delhi railway station everyday. They live/feed off mama-chacha networks +daily earnings. 1/4
Repeat lesson from English dictionaries :
Freebie : “Something given without having to pay for it, especially as a way of attracting support for or interest in something.”
Welfare : “Designed to promote well-being of disadvantaged social groups.”
Glad SC has acted against NGOs filing repeated frivolous cases. Many NGOs are actually the front face of vested interests. They get strong and upright officers embroiled in false litigation and get away by hiding under an NGO umbrella.
Women MPs hurl abuses at one another inside parliament. Politicians nabbed hoarding bundles of cash. Judges express personal gripes through media. MP's devouring chicken b4 Gandhi's statue takes precedence over national issues. Citizens attend mass funeral of good governance.
My open letter to IAS toppers and other career women. It is brutally frank though. I tell them they have the power to make a difference to hundreds - even tens of thousands of lives ! They must not allow societal compulsions to restrict scaling mountains!
We should waste no more time on the Global Hunger Index. But, the पालन-पोषण of infants and less than 2 year olds needs building awareness inside individual homes -not easy -but extremely important. My article today.
I welcome the passage of the NMC Bill. From 1992 MOHFW has tried in vain to reform the MCI+ medicaleducation.Whatever reservations people( and I too have,) the legislation signifies a strong political will to change a rotten system.
