Naija Economic History reading group update.
A promise is a promise. I can commit to one monthly session on a Sunday. We can start on Sunday 15th September.
Unfortunately I have limited capacity as I want us to be thorough so I’ll select a healthy balance of people across
Nigerian economic history is fascinating. I’d love to start a reading group.
We focus so much on the tired debates in our political history that we neglect tough questions about what facilitated our economic decline. I don’t mean the war or the coups or the oil, I mean the
A friend once told me, Palestine is the litmus test of principled liberation politics. Every day on this app proves that to me. Huey knew this, Mandela knew this, George Jackson knew this, Kwame Ture knew this, Angela Davis knows this, the list goes on and on and on.
Bringing the TL back this striking image of Stuart Hall on crèche duty at the Women’s Liberation Movement conference hosted at Ruskin College, Oxford, in 1970.
Thinking today about how we organise childcare and education for liberation. Suggested readings welcome.
The same institution of police who protected Kate Middleton as she popped in maskless for a photo op, later turned brutality against women in mourning.
If the vigil was illegal, will Kate Middleton share in the consequences or?

I’m not going to lie, every time I think of how far Yoruba cinema has come my heart gets full. I have a personal connection to it, as I often say - those old VCDs taught me Yoruba, brought me closer to home and helped me understand the nuances in mummy’s gisting 🤭

Priti Patel is an agent of white supremacy BEFORE she is a woman of colour. She made it clear where her solidarity lies and we owe her absolutely nothing.
Imagine how different our discussions would be if Fanon and Hall entered the undergraduate curriculum as theorists of capitalism rather than as theorists of a narrow and neutralised conception of ‘race’. The questions we ask of texts will determine what they tell us.
1492, as Spain sets to begin exploration of the Americas for colonisation, they also announce the expulsion of Jews. Jews went into Auschwitz a group with an already long history of pogroms, exclusion and expulsion in Europe - anti-Semitism does not begin with the Nazis.
“Jews went into Auschwitz and came out as Jews. Africans went into the ships and came out as Blacks. The former is a Human holocaust; the latter is a Human and a metaphysical holocaust. This is why it makes little sense to attempt an analogy.”—-Frank B. Wilderson III
Went back to reread the ruling in light of this. As the threshold for urgency has been met Israel has been ordered to cease to do the following things immediately, and to stop its military from doing so too:
“(a) killing members of the group [Palestinians];
b) causing serious
A “ceasefire” is what you demand in an armed conflict. In a genocide you demand an immediate end to all genocidal acts and that is exactly what the ICJ ordered with immediate effect. Please stop helping “Israel” spin its historic defeat as a win.
Some of you claiming to be about revolutionary coalition building but can’t tell the difference between an opp and someone trying to learn. Extending grace is central to revolutionary praxis. Dunking on people doesn’t make you anyone’s vanguard.
I’m tired of people acting like things are too above the average person’s level of comprehension. No - you’re committed to deliberately complicating relatively simple concepts so that you can feed your ego and feel like you know more than you do.
Somebody pinch me - apparently I'm starting my PhD this year! I don't have a masters and I've been out of the academy for almost 5 years, but so many beautiful people believed in my project and I am filled with such immense gratitude. More when I get over the shock ❤️
Arise News carried their bad character to Washington and got suitably schooled.

One of my favourite pictures of my little person. I fight so she doesn’t have to grow up in a world which is characterised by such wanton disregard for human life, dignity and freedom. ♥️
Still sitting with Robin Kelley’s reminder (via Rodney) that Black Studies is not the study of Black people but the study of the world from a Black perspective.

I'm seeing a lot of commentary on the Air Peace debacle and, frankly, Allen Onyema has a very valid point.
The trouble is, many Nigerians don't understand the importance of competition laws for protecting the ultimate interests of consumers.
So what's the charge?

My mama used to buy me all these verbal and non verbal reasoning books. Was doing the tests at 3 or 4 years old. She’d come home from work and mark them before making dinner. Eventually, I would learn to read novels with hers and we’d pick them out at WHSmiths together.

My mum got ICAN forms for me when I was in secondary school and kept them in her wardrobe for years. I’m not sure if she spotted that I had a knack for figures, but it was a seed.Decades later, FCCA, FCA, CPA, MBA, CFEI. Intentional parenting is such a powerful tool of influence.
Can we stop doing this take? How can you centre “labour” in the abstract if you don’t engage the technologies of identity which differentiate and give it meaning? Identity and feelings aren’t in some separate idea space, they emerge from and tell us a lot about material reality.

It angers me that I’m supposed to watch this and believe that my solidarity should be with those on the front lines of laundering the reputation of settler colonialism, apartheid and ethnic cleansing. It could never be me.
It’s profoundly neoliberal to behave as though the work of politicisation happens in private. It’s not about giving reading lists, it’s about working through ideas together. The space to learn and grow in public is something we must all be defending if we want to get free.
The race/class debate makes me want to run my forehead through a wall because an material analysis of race is always already an analysis of class formation. Racial politics is always a class politics (proletarian or bourgeois) and class politics is always a racial politics.
To make the claim that Marxism is essentially European, you have to ignore millions of colonised people who found in his work the tools to understand their condition.
The black Marxist tradition treats Marxism is a methodology, not a fixed set of conclusions about the world.

The British are 1% of the world's population. But 2 billion people speak our language while billions more live under our democratic legacy, benefit from antibiotics, phones, TVs, the internet & all our other inventions, and are protected by our military. But yeah, whatevs John.
When a Governor comes out and tells you about the size of the debt left to him, but doesn’t comment specifically about the debt servicing implications on the budget, he’s not ready to work. He’s preparing his excuse.
When he now comes out to say this is why he can’t pay
I don wake. Lets talk about "naira defence" for a quick second.

Starting a thread with a list of places to go for data and information on governance and economy in Nigeria. I’ll add it to my highlights.
Drop yours too👇🏾
Taking this as an opportunity to do a master thread because I’m tired at this point. We all understand the challenges of operating in Nigeria, the vast majority are neither new nor surprising. Despite this, there are so many distortions and half truths in the discussion that I
I wish to urgently call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to end the inconsistency in duty charges as it is affecting the general business atmosphere in the country. The federal government should stop the arbitrary and ever-increasing customs duties as

Revolutionary politics must come first and foremost from a deep belief in and love of humanity. Without love, without a belief in our capacity to transform through empathy, learning and struggle, we have no hope for creating a just world.
I ate from the same plate as my daddy mostly until I was in secondary school.

There are two senses in which this is the case for me. 1) In recognising that the struggle against colonialism is not over - Palestine experiences ongoing settler colonisation. 2) it’s a test of someone’s commitment, to hold fast to the principle of freedom when it gets punished

This is part of the myth Europe tells itself to ignore the sickness at the heart of its culture. They pretend that they were safe havens, that they didn’t turn away Jewish refugees that they entered the war for noble reasons.
Through my labour of love, I stumbled on the National Repository of Nigeria online via the National Library of Nigeria.

Those selling Argentina’s Javier Milei’s far-right agenda as a model for cost cutting in Nigeria won’t report that:
- Argentina’s debt to GDP is 79.9% (IMF), Nigeria’s is 41.3% (IMF). Most of Argentina’s debt is external and dollar denominated. Most of Nigeria’s debt is domestic
I think if we replace “nothing to do with” with “is categorically not determined by” we’d get a fairer assessment of the intervention. At least in my reading.
Just called my secondary school English teacher, who taught me how to debate and is now like an adopted mummy to me. I have some big news for her.
She asked me to guess what she was doing. Turns out she was just about to start a debate with her class who were all busy
Single mum here 🙋🏾♀️ - this policy is violent as fuck. ID is integral to the capacity to access the most basic provisions, especially given hostile environment.
This is not about holidays, it’s about a state which is angling for opportunities to strip us of our most basic rights.
Now we’re talking.
Throwing money at irrigation, fertiliser and seedlings without addressing the storage and logistics side of the value chain is like pouring into a sieve and hoping for the best.
At c.N3.5trn, Nigeria’s annual post-harvest losses are over 9 times higher than Agric budget for 2024.
Our first insight was at Benue State, where a staff of the Agric Ministry said:"If you go to my Local Goverment, you will begin to Cry."
So, we drove to the Local Government.
Not me thinking about how I need more money then discovering my daughter’s nursery’s plan to bump fees up by over £300 a month. I’m actually spun and I’m tired. Nationalise childcare.
Same Binance the UK shut down to regulate. Same Binance the US just fined $4.3 billion.
All over money-laundering and regulatory infractions.
Bring them to the table. Regulate them well. Strengthen KYC. Just don’t be lying about the facts.
One last one.
Cardoso is asserting his independence.
The CBN won’t ban importers from the FX market - dairy or anything else. If the FG wants policy in that direction they should make laws and regulate.
It’s not about connections now, the CBN won’t feed the oligopolies
Especially grateful today, on Nakba 73, for all the Palestinians who have taught me so much of how to carry revolution in my heart wherever I go. Palestine will be free. We will all be free. ❤️🏹🇵🇸

The left needs to stop looking on at political violence it views as "unstrategic" with disdain. If all we can offer is hollow parliamentary alliances and not long term political organisation, that is a failure of the left - not of those resisting.
The Special Anti-Robbery Squad was established in 1992 to combat a sharp increase in armed robberies and kidnappings. Initially, the 15 officers assigned to this unit operated undercover and didn’t wear uniforms.
More energy in defence of Priti Patel than smoke for the MPs who *literally* called for the deportation of their constituents in a pandemic. Get out of here!
As a Black Marxist, it irks me no end that I’m trapped between weirdo Marxists who think ‘Race’ is a purely superstructural phenomenon and currents of black thought which make glib declarations about what Marx’s project was which show that they’ve never seriously engaged with him
People generally don’t realise that SLS was a CBN Gov during crisis. That’s why I see so many parallels between him and Cardoso.

After demanding subsidies and single digit credit from government you’ll smuggle it out in the name of freedom to make profit while the Nigerians whose commonwealth funded those interventions are starving.

I’m a stan when it comes to the CBN and I’m unapologetic about it. If you know what is actually required to achieve what the governor and deputy governors have accomplished in the last 10 months, you would be too.
I think one of the things that worries me most about politics today is how quickly the collective assumption that people essentially cannot change has settled in despite so many compelling examples of how they do all the time and how they get radicalised constantly.
