Animaniacs is script based, so we can't stray from the scripts too much. One exception was when I snuck in this E.T. gag... which was immediately almost cut! But then I threw enough of a fit that they put it back in.

When Darrell first landed The Tom and Jerry Show, he asked me to rough in some basic mouth shapes for the animators. I quickly did these and threw in some dialog to test. In the craziness to get the show out, these ultimately were never sent to the animation studio. Oh well…

Some vendor studios' 1st-pass were in full color but silent? I was confused at first, but realized their pipeline probably never used our audio- they'd follow the lip assignments on our x-sheets without question. We'd punch up here and there. A little helps a lot.

One idea I came up with for the new Animaniacs was something called "The Gnome in Marsha's Mouth." The concept was that any time Marsha wanted to make a good impression, this gnome would come out and say the most horrible things, but it would still work out for Marsha in the end

Hhahaa! The designs of both the characters and BGs are fantastic, but the timing is just screaming "look at how clever we're being", and they just feel slow and boring. They don't feel like real characters making decisions like Bill and Joe's MGM ones.

I feel like I’ve boarded stuff like this a million times, and yet as it moves through production people always seem confused by it… as if they’ve never seen anything like this before. IT MAKES ME CRAZY
Drew this up earlier today as an example for my crew earlier of an old anime trick to do a high speed scene with the most efficient possible use of animation and BG elements. All you need is a cycling ground plane and a slow panning bg element and you’re off too the races.
