I think it’s some mixture of being connected to a right wing media/social group and posturing to make a status quo idea feel progressive and radical

Trump offers fantasy solutions to made up problems, but at least they are solutions. His slogan is a wall, not a 5% increase to border patrol. There's a specific value proposition to Trump, if you buy into him, and the Democrats have been consistently afraid to offer the same.

For anyone else moving focus from here to there

One small good thing to come out of this is that Grover Cleveland is no longer the only president to be elected twice, non-consecutively. Finally knocks him down a peg.

Kind of guy who’s really passionate about the election but only because of the Metropolitan water district commissioners
