Understanding the Kuti Legacy Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti (1891–1955) Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti was a distinguished Nigerian churchman, educationist, and administrator who left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s educational and social landscape. Born on April 30, 1891, into an Egba family in Abeokuta, his legacy is firmly tied to his contributions to education and advocacy for justice. As the founding president of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ransome-Kuti spearheaded the establishment of what would become Africa’s largest professional group, advocating for the rights and welfare of teachers across the nation. The Hat Incident: A Defining Moment In 1928, while passing through a colonial military settlement in Abeokuta, an incident occurred that would underscore Ransome-Kuti’s courage and defiance of colonial oppression. A British soldier demanded that he remove his hat as a sign of respect while walking past the Union Jack. Ransome-Kuti refused. Under the threat of a bayonet, he was forced to comply, nearly losing an eye in the process. This act of defiance and the ensuing injury caused a public outcry, amplifying the call for fairness and justice in the colonial system. The uproar led to a significant outcome: the relocation of the military barracks from the center of Abeokuta to Lafenwa, on the outskirts of the town, where it remains to this day.
