Three ceremonies later, I’m officially a University of Maryland graduate. Learned so much these past four years, including how great women’s basketball is. Also happy birthday mom
This morning after shoot around, Angel Reese said it’s been hard for her to adjust to losing after being so successful in college. She mentioned her and fellow rookie Kamilla Cardoso never lost like this in college so they’ve had to learn not to dwell on the losses
Reese also talked about going to watch WNBA games when she was at Maryland and what it’s like to be on the other side “To kind of be in the moment now and being able to be the inspiration is something that’s important and something I’ve always looked forward to.”
After four years at Maryland, Diamond Miller is looking to compete at the next level. Miller, the No. 2 projected pick officially declared for the WNBA draft alongside teammates Abby Meyers and Elisa Pinzan.
Abby Meyers signed a rest-of-season hardship contract with the Washington Mystics. She joins fellow Maryland women’s basketball alum Kristi Toliver, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Tianna Hawkins on the Mystics roster.
Remember when
@WBBTimeline
literally changed their name to Across Candace Parker’s timeline because she was literally in every post was in top 5 for like every record. A true W legend
I’m so excited to announce that I’ll be a member of the
@SJI_Update
class of 2024! Being a part of this program is a dream come true.
And I’m even more thrilled that I’ll be staying in Maryland this summer as a sports intern for
@BaltimoreBanner
!
Mayé Touré of Rhode Island commits to the Terps. The 6-2 French forward averaged 12.5 points and 7.7 rebounds this past season. She adds great depth to the front court and plays well in transition, a great fit for Maryland.
"I didn't expect them to shrink an 18-point lead in about four minutes," Caitlin Clark said of Maryland, but she acknowledged Maryland's fight and said the Terps' record does not show how good they are.
A great birthday present for Brenda Frese. Christina Dalce of Villanova commits to Maryland. Dalce was a 3x3 teammate of Shyanne Sellers this past summer.
Faith Masonius has built a successful NIL brand for herself, partnering with brands like Under Armour, Steve Madden and the Washington Capitals. She’s built it by staying true to herself and sharing her personal story through TikTok.
I wrapped up my two seasons of covering Maryland women’s basketball. It’s been an absolute honor to cover this team and I’ve learned so much over the past two years. Thanks to everyone who read my work and to
@sam_jane230
and
@iandecker111
for being amazing beat partners.
Abby Meyers, Jakia Brown-Turner, and now Saylor Poffenbarger. Players from Maryland who have transferred into the program have thrived the past two seasons. Meyers went No. 11 in the WNBA draft and won the Euro Cup with the London Lions. Brown-Turner just signed with the Mystics.
Interesting tidbit from today’s game, Bri McDaniel asked Brenda Frese to try playing point guard for Maryland, a position she played in high school. McDaniel spent much more time handling the ball today and finished with 5 assists.
It’s official, British forward Isi Ozzy-Momodu committed to Maryland tonight. The 6’” forward had her official visit a few weeks ago when the Terps played Iowa.
Despite the loss, Jakia Brown-Turner tied her career high of 25 points. Since Jan 14, Brown-Turner has averaged 20.4 points per game. This is the level of offense Brenda Frese expected from JBT when she came to Maryland.
Tonight’s game was honestly so exciting and fun to watch that I forgot to tweet or write anything for most of the third quarter because I was so caught up in watching. I am genuinely so grateful to cover women’s basketball.
With Christina Dalce, Maryland women’s basketball has 14 on the roster for next season. The Terps have a really versatile group that can run the floor and defend well
Shyanne Sellers was one of the players selected for Kelsey Plum's Dawg Class, a training camp designed to help guards learn the skills necessary to bridge the gap between the college and pro levels. Diamond Miller was a part of last year's inaugural class.
Brenda Frese called Faith Masonius the MVP of the game. Shyanne Sellers said Masonius doesn't get enough credit for everything she does for the Terps. I wrote about Faith Masonius and all the big and little things she did to help her team upset No. 1 seed Ohio State.
Abby Meyers has signed with the London Lions for their 2023-24 season, which starts in October. The Lions compete in the British Basketball League and the EuroCup.
Faith Masonious said the biggest difference between this year's team and last year's team is size and experience. Allie Kubek and Emma Chardon (both 6'2") are returning from injuries. Freshman Hawa Doumbouya is the tallest player Brenda Frese has had in nearly 10 years at 6'7".
Jakia Brown-Turner will never forget her senior day game at Maryland. The NC State transfer returned home for final year of basketball and put on a show Sunday with a career-high 32 points.
In 2022-23, Maryland women's basketball had 5 players transfer in and four freshmen. The Terps went to the Elite Eight. This is a program that has experience quickly building chemistry with new and returning players on and off the court.
The Mystics have five protected and three unprotected contracts. The rest are training camp or rookie contracts. If JBT plays in training camp like she did in January and February for the Terps she has a shot of making the team.
Last year I made a list of what I hoped to do in my career to keep myself motivated after some setbacks, at the top was covering the women’s Final Four. So excited to share it’s happening a year later and that I’m a part of the team for
@herhoopstats
in Cleveland in two weeks.
We are so back. Maryland women’s basketball plays its first exhibition game of the season against California (PA) in about 50 minutes. Stayed tuned for updates for
@DBKSports
I’ve watched a lot of Mayé’s film since I thought she would be joining Maryland. She has good post moves, but also a great jumper to add floor spacing. Think she really fits in with what the Terps are building for 2024-25.

@oliviajanik9
returns to the women's basketball beat and will be joined by
@sam_jane230
, who covered the team last season, for in-depth coverage of Brenda Frese's squad.
Fun fact: incoming freshman Hawa Doumbouya is now listed as 6'7", making her the tallest player for the Terps since Essence Townsend in the 2013-14 season.
Maryland women’s basketball’s second commitment is Rainey Welson, the No. 52 recruit in the 2025 class. Welson is a 5’9” point guard from Wisconsin. This is the Terps’ first 2025 recruit.
Three Maryland women’s lacrosse players, Aurora Cordingley, Abby Bosco and Emily Sterling were named to the USA Lacrosse Magazine’s All-American first team.

"It was really cool. I love that she was able to come support us. She's one of my closest friends so to have her watching me it's like a full circle moment," Lavender Briggs said about former Terp Diamond Miller's presence at the game tonight.
I’m so grateful to have spent the past five months covering
@TerpsWBB
for
@DBKSports
! It’s been so much fun to cover this team with some really talented writers. Last night might have been the last home game but there’s still more coverage to come!
In honor of National Women and Girls in Sports Day, I wanted to share some of my favorite stories I’ve written about women in sports. Starting with this piece about Brinae Alexander’s career night against Niagara in December.
Briggs, who transferred to Maryland last winter from Florida, is one of the five 1,000 point scorers on this year’s team with 1,206. Her ability to come off the bench and score alongside Brinae Alexander has been the “X factor” for this year’s team coach Brenda Frese said.
.
@TerpsWBB
senior shooting guard Lavender Briggs - who has averaged 7.2 points and 4.2 rebounds off the bench - said she will return for her last year of eligibility.
“I do plan to come back,” she said. “I do plan to get my master’s and take my extra year and come back and play.”
Maryland women’s basketball’s spokesperson confirms that Brinae Alexander will return next year for the Terps. Alexander averages 8.7 points per game this season and has a 43.6 shooting percentage from behind the arc.
Brenda Frese and Allie Kubek gave shout-outs to Hawa Doumybouya in the press conference. Doumbouya had 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block in 8 minutes.
Faith Masonius confirms her entry to the transfer portal with an Instagram post. Says she has nothing but love for Maryland and the program. Masonius spent 5 years with the team.
Maryland women's basketball alums Crystal Langhorne, Marissa Coleman and Kristi Toliver are in the house for this morning's game. The three won the 2006 NCAA Championship for Maryland with Towson coach Laura Harper.
That's game. Maryland gets its first ranked win of the season and upsets No. 4 Ohio State 82-61.
Shyanne Sellers: 25 pts, 8 reb, 7 ast
Jakia Brown-Turner and Brinae Alexander: 19 pts
Faith Masonius: 15 pts, 11 reb
Maryland commits Kyndal Walker (DC) and Breanna Williams (Montana) were named the girls basketball Gatorade Player of Year for their respective states.
British 6’3” forward Isi Ozzy-Momodu had her official visit with the Terps this weekend. The 20 year old currently plays for junior college Gulf Coast State but also has international experience playing for Great Britain. Ozzy-Momodu has also visited Syracuse and SMU.
Sources tell me Lucy Olsen has heard from the following schools who are currently the leading contenders to land her:
Iowa, Maryland, Tennessee, West Virginia, Syracuse, Stanford, Virginia Tech.
Maryland's Shyanne Sellers is one of the 52 players named as an All-America finalist for the WBCA DI Coaches. Sellers flourished in her junior year, averaging 15.6 points, 5.5 assists and 5.8 rebounds.
For leading Maryland women's basketball to the NCAA tournament, coach Brenda Frese earned a $25,000 bonus. If the Terps make it to the second round, she'll earn an additional $30,000 under her current contract.
When my mom was growing up my grandma created an entire softball league so she could play. Today, I’m covering a sold out women’s basketball tournament. Shout out to the women who have been investing in girls’ and women’s sports for decades.
Kyndal Walker, a 5'9" point guard and the No. 34 recruit in the 2024 class out of Saint John's College High School, just committed to Maryland. Walker is Maryland's 2nd 2024 recruit after Ava McKennie committed earlier this year.
Tianna Hawkins, former Maryland player, retires from the WNBA. Hawkins was drafted 6th overall in 2013 by Seattle and won a championship with Washington in 2019.
Shyanne Sellers received an All-American honorable mention from the WBCA. Sellers has been really underrated this season, in my opinion. She's one of just eight DI players to average more than 15 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds per game.
Abby Meyers had another great game with the London Lions, in her first start with the team she had 16 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists. The Lions beat Durham 111-69.
Brenda Frese served as an assistant coach for Iowa State from 1995-1999 under coach Bill Fennelly. This is the first matchup between Frese's Terps and Fennelly's Cyclones.
Maryland women’s basketball’s February 3 matchup against No. 4 Iowa is sold out. This is the Terps’ first sellout since December 29, 2016 when UConn came to town, per a team spokesperson.
