What is gaslighting? Gaslighting involves trying to convince someone that something they saw or heard or experienced is different to what they believe they saw or heard or experienced. The intention of ‘gaslighting’ is to have someone question their reality, their memory, their own sanity. There is always an upside for the person doing the gaslighting, which may be that they are not exposed for doing something illegal or hurtful, that they reduce the confidence of someone which plays to their sadistic nature etc. An example from my research is of a man taking the spare car key of his wife’s car and randomly moving her car from where she has parked it at work, so she starts to think she’s going crazy. The word gaslighting comes from the 1938 play and subsequent movie versions of ‘Gas light’, where a man regularly goes to the empty house next door and turns the gas down in his own house so the gaslights dim. When his wife asks if he notices the lights going down, he says no. She is left questioning her own sanity. Gaslighting is a favourite tactic of dark personalities such as narcissists, psychopaths.
