In a 200+ sample of older adults with depression, we found that fear of suicide was the only self-reported deterrent to suicide that differentiated those who had a history of suicidal behavior and those who did not - where non-suicide attempters were more likely to cite fear 1/2
of suicide and attempters were less likely to cite fear of suicide. This aligns with previous findings that fearlessness of death is what may allow a subset of individuals to transition from ideation to attempt. 2/2
I can't emphasize enough how important it is, in academia, to have people in your corner who take time out to assess your work & provide honest & constructive feedback, even if they aren't beneficiaries of your work. People who really care, & want to see you do well are a rarity.
