We all need a little help from our friends! Our new southern sea otters seem to be getting along swimmingly. As you can see in this #MomentOfBlue, our male sea otter is fond of assisting one of our females with her grooming.

Their excellent eyesight & electroreceptors around their mouths enable them to detect prey in the murky waters of their native habitat. They are unique among stingrays in that they have large litters of up to 8 pups. Check them out in our Conservation Hall! (2/2)

Unsurprisingly, they feed on all sort of things including, shrimp, clams, lobsters, fish, birds, and even small sharks. Even more impressively, they can grow from 2 pounds in their first year to 20 pounds by age 2. (2/2)

In this #MomentOfBlue, our green moray eel can be seen devouring some clams that her keepers laid out at the surface of the Glover’s Reef exhibit. This helps encourage natural foraging behavior & builds trust when we need to conduct a visual exam.

Nom, nom, nom! We feed our three southern sea otters a seafood medley of shrimp, clams, squid, & sardines to help fuel their fast metabolisms. These animals can eat about 25% of their body weight per day! Swim on over to Sea Cliffs to watch a feeding at 11AM, 1PM, & 3PM daily.

Their diet includes invertebrates, especially crustaceans and urchins, which they crush with their strong beak-like teeth. These attractive fish have plenty of personality, but like most pufferfish, they produce a deadly toxin called tetrodotoxin. (2/2)

During the “quiet” sleep cycle, the octopus’s skin is pale. In the “active” stage, the animal starts to change color. It’s impossible to prove, but this may even suggest that octopuses dream. (2/2)
