Elon scandalizing spending that seems superficially silly is not new — it’s a page out of the old crappy Gingrich/1990s playbook (see below for an example). What’s annoying is that as a tech guy, he knows basic R&D stuff can seem dumb (they are studying cow farts!) even if it substantive. There’s a lot of waste to be identified, for sure. But stuff that can seem dumb often is very valuable. THREAD. The New York Times is aiding one of the most consequential propaganda efforts in modern history. It's outrageous to call this a "government cost-cutting effort." Rule #1 of good journalism: never adopt as truth the stated reasons powerful people give for doing stuff.
