@WernerderChamp @philipsargent @heatpolicyrich @JonathanWaxman1 @guynewey Yes, they compete, none is perfect, but I think methanol is a smidge ahead

@JonathanWaxman1 @guynewey @philipsargent @heatpolicyrich Thanks Jonathan! I've been in on-and-off contact with ES Cat for the past 5 years. Actually went to school with some of the modellers :-).

@philipsargent @heatpolicyrich @JonathanWaxman1 @guynewey As you're indicating, there are some trade-offs between fossil+CCS/CDR and CCU, it depends a bit on your attitude to feasibilities of scaling up electrolysers versus sequestration volumes.

@euronion42 Outlook warns "the scalability of this COF and the design of a practical device will be an important priority for future implementation of these materials" so I guess some way to go.

@MLiebreich @FlDeveuster @gnievchenko @fneum_ @SpitfireRsrch @mbarnardca Fine, but those kind of models are often very specific business cases for particular products. Our goal is different: to try understand possible worlds at the system level, and what we need to reach the attractive ones (low emissions, fast implementation, high acceptance, etc.).

@FlDeveuster @gnievchenko @fneum_ @MLiebreich @SpitfireRsrch @mbarnardca We don't produce a *single* result, but a spectrum of results that reflect different uncertainties. Some of those scenarios agree with scenarios of those experts, depending on inputs. No expert knows exactly how LCA of 1st gen biofuels will evolve, or how much seq. is feasible.

@FlDeveuster @gnievchenko @fneum_ And 1st generation biofuels, as currently practised, have high lifecycle emissions due to directly and indirectly induced land use change, processing and farming practices. If those aspects are addressed, I'm pretty ambivalent on what the final product is.

@FlDeveuster @gnievchenko @fneum_ @MLiebreich @SpitfireRsrch @mbarnardca I dunno, the models *do* take account of business cases in a simplified way, the discrepancies are more on - how much CO2 sequestration is realistic by 2050 - whether to go back to landfilling of plastics to sequester carbon - how much we want to rely on 1st generation biofuels

@gnievchenko @FlDeveuster @fneum_ The downgraded role for the H2 network is why I think it's important to look at methanol for remaining use cases that need storeable fuel, as well as to soak up biomass residues without the need for big infrastructure:
