I think I need to clarify that when grading an SPM script, rather than counting errors, a paper is judged holistically if it has too many or too few errors to gauge whether if it meets a writing standard. So, it’s not about counting errors per se.

You gotta meet all of the criteria for your writing to be considered as band A.
The first thing the examiner would scrutinise is your grammar. Grammar is key. You can write one hell of an essay, but if your grammar is out, band A would be out of your reach.

I’ve marked SPM papers for years, trust me you can use contractions and abbreviations if the context allows it i.e. writing narratives or informal essays. Dekat uni lain sikit kot, depending on what you’re writing lah.

I’ve a chinese friend who excelled in every exam & active in koko but wasn’t offered any placement in the local uni. But god is all fair. He was offered scholarship by the S’pore gov. Quite disheartening really that ur own country doesn’t recognise its people’s hard work.

This is an example of a blanket statement. If you care enough to go through Malaysian Education Blueprint, you’d know that only 28% of SPM candidates achieve at least a Credit benchmarked to Cambridge 1119.

I think we should recognize that our country is VERY duolingual. Our English is actually damn good considering it's our second language.
Taking advantage of that, it's actually a lot cheaper to not having to dub everything in Malay. It's just business.

I marked this based on my experience as an SPM examiner. Grammar is the first thing that’d be scrutinised. Then, it goes to sentence structures, vocabulary, tone of the essay &whether it’s engaging or not. You’d be surprised to know that many SPM candidates can’t write like this.

There are two mistakes in this essay: discipling and know’s. We call them slips instead of gross errors since the student obviously knows her way with the language but might have accidentally committed one/two mistakes due to the pressure of completing the essay on time.

Whenever marking, examiners are always reminded that students are writing under great amount of pressure, might ada slips here and there.
Marks are deducted looking at the number errors in the essay, then we have to refer to the answer scheme to determine the best band.
