Hot off the press! Our study shows that the reasons for shisha use in Nigeria include shisha flavors; limited knowledge on the negative health effects; & the availability & ability to smoke shisha in many places, even where cigarette smoking is prohibited

It was a pleasure to meet the Data on Youth and Tobacco in Africa (DaYTA) consortium partners from the DRC, Kenya and Nigeria last week. Addressing data gaps on tobacco use among adolescents will enable data-driven decisions to reduce tobacco use prevalence among adolescents.

Meet one of our main speakers for the launch event, Professor Noreen Mdenge @noreenmdege. She is an associate professor of Health Sciences at the University of York @UniOfYork. Noreen Mdege's research interests cover alcohol consumption, tobacco use, medication adherence and low and income countries (LMIC). She is interested in individual-level and population-level health perspectives and approaches, and specific populations such as HIV positive and TB patients. Her main interests are in observation research; intervention development and evaluation; intervention mechanisms of action; intervention implementation and scale-up; and how alcohol and tobacco affect the incidence, trajectory and outcomes of other comorbidities such as AIDS-related and non-AIDS-related cancer and other non-cancer conditions among HIV positive and TB patients. Noreen is also interested in HIV/AIDS or TB related health outcomes. She uses both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
