Hundreds of thousands of people have been rallying against Yoon in South Korea for the past few months, and Yoon is using the same playbook that the Rhee, Park and Chun military regimes used to suppress the people’s resistance.
#OTD in 1980, the people of #Gwangju rose up against Chun Doo-hwan's military dictatorship, calling for democracy in south Korea. In response, with a green light from the US, south Korean police & soldiers massacred 2,300 people. We will never forget the martyrs of Gwangju. 🧵

US President Jimmy Carter has died. We do not mourn Jimmy Carter. Today we mourn the 2,000 martyrs of Gwangju, who were slaughtered by the South Korean military regime with the support and knowledge of the Carter Administration.

The US is giving israel ammo left over from the Korean War to bomb Gaza. This is why we share a common struggle with the Palestinian people against US imperialism.
Expose by @Haaretz this morning - #Israel's military uses #US Korean War (1950-1953) surplus ammunition in #Gaza, leading to indiscriminate and reckless targeting, in what could very well be a grave breach of international humanitarian law #IHL.

Yoon has declared martial law for the first time since 1987 to “eliminate” all pro-DPRK and anti-state forces — the same narrative used to suppress the resistance from 1950s to 1980s. Right now, he is blocking other party members from entering the national assembly building.
Martial law can be lifted by a majority vote in parliament. But am hearing the police is barricading the entrance to the building with buses.

Today marks 76 years since the start of the Jeju Uprising—a patriotic rebellion against Korea’s division in 1948, two years before the Korean War. In order to crush the rebellion and keep Korea under its boot, the US orchestrated a massacre of 30,000-60,000 people.
On this day in 1948, Koreans on Jeju Island organized an armed rebellion for a unified, independent country, free of US colonization. In response, the US military government & ROK massacred 30,000-60,000 people until 1954. TW: Police brutality, torture, rape mention

A South Korean court has just ordered the Japanese government to pay reparations to survivors of imperial Japan’s wartime “comfort women” system. This is the first time a court has ruled on the side of comfort women survivors.

August 15 is Liberation Day in Korea. #OTD in 1945, 35 years of Japanese colonialism came to an end. Over 75 years later, Korea remains divided and occupied. To understand why, we have to look at what happened from 1945-1950 on both sides of the 38th parallel.

Squid Game's premise echoes real events in south Korea's history. Countless wartime massacres were committed by the US and ROK and hidden from public knowledge throughout the 20th century.

France has put a stolen Korean artifact on display in a Paris museum — with no plans to ever return it to Korea. Jikji is the oldest book that was printed using metal moveable type. It was printed in Korea in 1377, and taken by the first French consul to Korea in the 1890s.
VIDEO: The oldest known work printed on a mechanical press, a Korean book that predates the first European example by several decades, goes on display in Paris for the first time in 50 years.

Today we remember the Gwangju Uprising, a mass democratic rebellion in south Korea against the US-backed dictatorship of Chun Doo-Hwan. The memory of Gwangju is particularly pertinent this year, as the global student movement confronts capital in solidarity with Palestine 🧵.

President Yoon of South Korea has been arrested. This is thanks to the masses of people who mobilized for over a month for a people's democracy. This is a major victory—but it is not the end of the struggle in Korea. Onward, to total social transformation & national liberation.

The Korean right has long been nurtured by imperialist collaboration, and gender violence has always been part of this relationship. Men targeting An San for being from Gwangju shows us how important misogyny is to promoting right wing politics in general in South Korea.
S. Korean men are demanding the Korean Archery Association to take back the gold medals from Olympic record-breaking archer An San, alleging that “she's a short-haired feminist.”. And it's only the most recent episode in a barrage of mounting anti-feminist backlash here. Thread.

The demolition of roads connecting North and South Korea is the outcome of Seoul and Washington’s unbridled aggression. South Korea now touts “reunification” in the form of regime change. In this light, the demolition of roads is a defensive maneuver against invasion.
North Korea just blew up its side of roads leading to South Korea in the latest expression of anger against Seoul and the idea of reunification

#OTD in 1948, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was founded. The DPRK has survived 73 years of US imperialism. To understand the DPRK, we have to understand its revolutionary origins. This is the story of the revolution in northern Korea before the Korean War.

🚨South Korea aids the US's cowardly attack on Yemen. The US uses south Korea as an attack dog for imperialism around the world. As Korean people, neutrality is not an option. We can choose the side of the oppressor, or the side of liberation.
The #WhiteHouse announced that 10 countries participated in the aggression against #Yemen. Here they are!

On April 19, 1960 the working masses of South Korea—led by the student movement—toppled the US puppet dictator Syngman Rhee. When united with the masses, students are a potent force for liberation. We salute the brave @Columbia students standing up for Palestine.
April 19 marks the April Revolution in 1960 S. Korea. An uprising of workers and students overthrew Syngman Rhee, a US-backed dictator who used extreme political repression and killed tens of thousands. Koreans continue to struggle against imperialism and corruption to this day.

Jay Leno’s anti Asian jokes were targeted against North Korea. Imperialist aggression against Asian “enemy states” is what sustains the idea of Asians as enemy aliens. “Anti-racism” without anti-imperialism is just another form of collaboration.
when folks say you can't disconnect US imperlaism from anti-asian violence, this is what they're fucking talking about
