For anyone interested I went long on the new Ferrara and Schrader. Maybe some of it will be of interest. Give it a read if you have some time.

All Ears (Jiayin, 2023) The majority of this is very strong. Jiayin's observation of the mundane and making it seem so extraordinary & full of purpose is retained even in this work of fiction. It's when she moves into more overtly fictional territory that the film falters.

💿May Announcements 💿 We always offer a healthy spread and this month is no exception: a cult caveman satire, tender traintracks drama, real-life prison escapes and a new Raro title on police corruption🧵

Savage Nights (Collard, 1992) Finding fulfillment in death and learning to live again. Collard's camera and performance feel inseparable from each other. An artist wrestling with his vision of the world and how to render it through himself on film. A wonderful vision of rebirth.

@BrndnStrssng @FilmsRadiance The 70s are Fukasaku's golden period but the 80s are where he really went wild.

Up there with Ford, Walsh, Ray, & all the other canonical ones everyone talks about. Even the ones not mentioned here like HM Pulham Esq, The Wedding Night, & Stella Dallas are incredible

@NeilBahadur Feel like most still don't really go to him beyond the canonized titles, but his work is one that only grows in relevancy and importance as time passes.

Viduthalai: Part II (Vetrimaaran, 2024) The first half is kind of a mess but the film gets back on stable ground in the second half. When Vetrimaaran commits to his central duo & how they play off of each other he returns to the heights of the first film.

The Works and Days (of Tayoko Shiojiri in the Shiotani Basin) (Edström/Winter, 2020) Returning to the land. The work is constant and continues even when we expire. Ours is but a small piece of the whole yet while we are actively engaged, it feels so significant.

Faith No More - ‘Ashes to Ashes’, Phoenix Festival, 1997. Mike Patton and the FNM boys are all energy in this performance. This is a fantastic song as well, deserves to be celebrated as such

Private Fears in Public Places (Resnais, 2006) Beautiful evocations of a time past, wherein emotions were sincere and there was no shame in love being given and misunderstandings leading the way for learning. So lonely, yet so full of tenderness and affection.
