Customers as TDD (Test Driven Development) Today, I explained "early stage startups to an engineering founder friend in a way that finally clicked for him. Think of early customers as TDD (Test Driven Development). But for startups, it's Test Driven Discovery. Each customer is a test case: - Enterprise customer = procurement edge case - Non-tech customer = UX stress test - High-touch client = support system load test In early days, each test can fail at multiple stages: - Pitch & Positioning - Pilot, UX - Support - Retention Success? - Renewed Deal = test passing end to end - Complaints = failed assertions - Churn = regression failure The counterintuitive truth? You're not trying to pass every test case in early days. You're discovering which ones matter for your target use case and move quickly. Some tests you'll fix. Others you'll mark "won't fix." That's okay. #startups #engineering

Incident Severity tells you who to wake up, complexity tells you who needs to stay up. I have been wondering if 'investigation surface area' can be looked at more systematically to also indicate coordination complexity #Engineering

"Your Roadmap Is a Bedtime Story" 🙃 Everyone nods and smiles in roadmap meetings, like a fantasy novel? Nobody believes the dates. Planned for release 2 months from now? Pure fiction. What works: - Ship. Learn. Adjust. - Weekly, not monthly, not quarterly. We ship & release daily many times at @Last9 and our customers are often surprised by how fast things evolve! #Engineering That makes our roadmap non-fiction!

Brooks' Law Isn't Theory. It's Math. Communication Channels Are Quadratic: 3 people = 3 lines 14 people = 91 lines You can't beat combinatorial growth. You can only isolate the blast radius. True for teams. True for services. This is why both your standups AND your service mesh are getting slower 🙃 #Engineering

@javilopen NYTimes introduced a website in '96. One of its headlines that day was 'Europe Better on Self-Regulation to Control the Internet' It has been going on for far too long
