When I look broadly at the situation in the US today, if I had to rank-order it’s needs, I would list them as follows: 1. Cultivation of a feeling of genuine togetherness between people of different races, ethnicities, religions, etc. 2. Rigorous, compelling education in virtue 3. Training in the skills and knowledge required to participate effectively in the political system All three on a broad scale, diffuse through the population. Only after these do we get to economic, technological, demographic, or geopolitical concerns. Each of these involves several nuances, covered in the thread below:

Once there was a criminal who was captured by the king's guards. He was brought before the king for his punishment. He begged and pleaded for mercy, claiming he had seen the error of his ways, he was acting out of impulse, and he would correct himself. The king said, "You committed the crime, so you must be punished. But I sense sincerity in your voice, so I will give you the option to choose your punishment..." The culprit was upset, but felt a little hopeful... "...either, you will take 100 lashes or you will eat 100 chilli peppers. Here. Now." The criminal was disoriented. He didn't know what to do, how to feel. He looked around him, the hall was full of people and guards; there was no escape. He thought for a moment. "I will take the peppers, sire." The basket of peppers were brought in front of him. He took a deep breath and ate one. His tongue burned, his eyes started watering. He gulped and took another. By the seventh his cheeks were becoming numb, his vision was swimming. How would he get to 100? "I can't do this! I can't do this! I will take the lashes!" "Very well," said the king. A guard stepped forward with the whip. By the 6th whip, his skin was bleeding. The burning in his mouth had subsided a bit though. "Stop! Stop! I will take the peppers!" "Very well." In this way, our culprit ended up eating 100 peppers and taking 100 lashes. The criminal: The American people* The peppers: The virulent, unreasonable-with Right The lashes: The virulent, unreasonable-with Left The king: Reality, ever balanced in His justice *What was our crime?

@prodigygrimes Interesting, not too familiar with the second one. I’ll have to check that out.

@Noahpinion These would be some of my suggestions.

The nuance is valuable because it moderates your views. No person who is capable of this kind of empathy / nuance will succumb to virulent, vitriol-fueled positions on things. The other side of it is arriving at firm conclusions of your own about things. This is totally possible, and the conclusions you do arrive at will be tempered AND comprehensive AND idiosyncratic AND evolving, because they are informed by a more holistic, and ever expanding perspective (though that doesn’t mean it’ll be perfect). The capacity for nuance/empathy and the ability to develop concrete positions on issues are like the yin and the yang of a mature thinker. The two processes are in a constant dialectic. Such a person can be a better leader, conflict resolver, strategist and innovator. It just takes time because this kind of multi-perspective taking/integrating is a skill and there are growing pains involved. Fwiw, people who value nuance and multi-perspective thinking are the kinds of people we’d love to work more with @TuskandQuill. So, if nothing else, you can be friends with us!

They are calling out a certain predatory pattern which is noticeable in the recent historical behavior of certain European nations, which would likely have been whitewashed if it wasn’t consistently and assertively pointed out…because “until the lion learns to speak, every story will glorify the hunter.” Often the leftists do go overboard and often they do underestimate/downplay people’s agency because when the problems are huge and complicated, it’s easier and more satisfying to blame than to ask people to take responsibility. We saw a lot of that over the past 10 years because they got a taste of significant power in the US.
