10 years ago I was learning to walk again after being fully paralyzed by an illness called GBS. Watching this old video I feel thankful. A lot of my motivation for @Decent and for life comes from here.

RT @thomaschattwill: For over a decade, self-righteous bullies gathered online and weaponized cancel culture. Now, the result is this abysm…

2025 marks fifteen years since I was paralyzed for the second time by Guillain Barre Syndrome, and stopped trusting or caring for my body. GBS is a rare neurological disorder that stripped the myelin sheaths from my nerves, leaving them unable to receive signals from my brain. I became fully paralyzed and was in intensive care for four months and rehab for another six. Recovery was brutal and uncertain. I had to learn to walk again, and my feet still tingle today. I look like I'm mean mugging in this photo, but the truth is I couldn't move my face. I grew up strong and healthy, but my second bout with GBS taught me many helpful lessons - and some wrong ones. As the years passed I withdrew deeper into my head. I made a point to keep dancing, because dancing makes me feel like myself. But I rarely exercised, barely drove, and took enough foolish physical risks that I'm lucky to be alive and well today. My wife went to nationals in speed skating, then picked up mountain biking at forty and was winning races within months. My sons take after her athletically, and there's nothing they love more than when I pick them up and toss them around in a pool. I run a company, @Decent, that's devoted to keeping people healthy. I plan to stick around for a good long time. But I can't keep holding myself back. Enough. In 2025, I will trust my body and reclaim my health. Please, tell me I won't. :)

❤️@Decent builds health plans around Direct Primary Care because healthcare is human. The right tech gives humans superpowers, and we've got some 🤯 new AI tech in the lab for DPCs, brokers, and members in 2025. Happy holidays, my friends. Sound on. Your Iron Man suit arrives soon.

Why do 59% of people say they’re “satisfied” with their health insurance — even when the system feels so broken? Because most people haven't actually needed to use it yet. People may love their doctors, but no one wants to deal with their health plan unless they absolutely have to. And when they do, it's probably on one of the worst days of their year. This isn't wine tasting: "@Decent" is about the best folks think they can hope for when it comes to their health plan. So here's what we focus on: 1) Help members engage with Direct Primary Care. THAT's the relationship that matters, and where the opportunity for delight resides. 2) Be reachable, kind, and helpful. 3) Make sure care gets paid for quickly and with no hassle. These are the best ways we've found to earn and keep our members' trust, especially when they need us. Because when your child is sick or your spouse is hurting, you don't need innovation. You need someone to pick up the phone and get things done.
