Joined June 2008
And I am simply thrilled that my deputy, Joel Kaplan, will now become Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer. Over the years that we have worked together, we have become good friends as well as close colleagues – I have laughed with, as well as learned from, Joel in equal measure. He is quite clearly the right person for the right job at the right time! I much look forward to spending the next few months handing over the reins to Joel before finally leaving Meta after so many enjoyable years at the company. 4/4

My time at the company coincided with a significant resetting of the relationship between “big tech” and the societal pressures manifested in new laws, institutions and norms affecting the sector. I hope I have played some role in seeking to bridge the very different worlds of tech and politics – worlds that will continue to interact in unpredictable ways across the globe. 2/4

In @lemondefr today, I’ve written about why the EU’s needless regulatory complexity and delay around AI rules cuts to the heart of its competitiveness challenge. AI has incredible potential to boost the European economy - but EU regulators are still moving too slowly. As President Macron said, Europe is “over-regulating and under-investing” itself out of the AI market. Political leaders across Europe recognise this - we need Europe’s regulators to follow suit.

We welcome the EDPB’s opinion on AI - but it’s frustrating that it has taken many months of unnecessary delay for regulators to approve the same legal mechanisms that the industry proposed at the start of this year. This slow motion decision making prevents Europeans from accessing the latest AI technology. We urge European regulators to quickly apply these principles in a pragmatic and transparent way so the EU can deliver the growth that leading European political figures are calling for.

Flattered to receive this year’s Peter Sutherland award from @BandF - following previous recipients Mario Draghi, Ursula Von Der Leyen, and Nancy Pelosi. Here’s my short acceptance speech – about me, my family, and why we shouldn’t give up on Europe!

Europe’s fragmented laws mean young people get vastly different levels of protection depending on which apps they use & where they’re based. To make it easier for parents & protect privacy, we need EU-wide regulation for parental approval and age verification at the app store or operating system level, creating consistent standards for all apps across Europe.

Today, we’ve announced important changes to Facebook and Instagram in the EU, including reducing the price of our subscription service by 40% and giving people in the EU the option to use Facebook & Instagram for free with less personalized ads. The changes we’re announcing today meet EU regulator demands and go beyond what’s required by EU law.

In a world where national security is inextricably linked with economic output, innovation & job growth, widespread adoption of US open source AI models is good for both security & the economy. Other nations - inc China - understand this and are racing to develop their own open source models. It is in America and the wider democratic world’s interest for US models to succeed and be the basis of the global open source standard.

As part of our commitment to reach net zero emissions across our value chain in 2030, we’re matching the @ENERGY pledge to accelerate carbon dioxide removal. We hope our pledge will encourage others so we can work collectively to scale climate solutions.

We’re expanding Meta AI to more countries, including Brazil and the UK. Unfortunately, we still can't roll it out in the EU because of the regulatory uncertainty we face there. I hope the new Commission looks afresh at these issues, consistent with President Von Der Leyen’s aim of completing the EU’s digital Single Market, so Europeans can benefit from this new wave of technologies.
