When you are working on a project, consider the business and user objectives.
Good design is the execution of form and function that delivers on these 2 objectives.
If you can do that you will be a valuable designer.
If you can cultivate and lead a team to amplify this at

Design and think about the whole experience.
Your superpower is to be able to zoom in and care about the details.
The structure, alignment, fonts, icons, colors, interactions.
And then zoom out & look at how that contributes to the overall brand & "integrated set of
15 years ago - the first Creative Director I worked for instilled in me a love for good type.
He taught me the beauty of different typefaces and how to use type.
Depending on the purpose:
Good type can be invisible.
It can be impactful.
It can create different feelings.
It
Designing the whole experience.
Zoom out beyond the pixels. What will each touchpoint and interaction be like?
What do we hope to achieve?
Who do we serve?
How can we help?

As designers it's an amazing feeling to make something out of nothing.
When you stare at that brief, that objective, that blank canvas and think how the fuck am I going to make this work...
In spite of the doubt you get to work.
A lot of junk happens, but on the other side of
My design process is pretty similar for every project.
However it doesn't mean I use every step, tool or technique that I know of.
Actually quite the opposite.
Depending on the team/project size, I prefer the path of least resistance.
Tools and techniques are there if you
When you breakdown a design - it's really just shapes, colors, alignment, images, letters, numbers, and unnamed layers ;)
The end system is usually greater than the sum of parts.
Get good at the granular details and the system becomes a lot more beautiful.
Most people think I have attention to detail. And my work is described often as crisp or clean.
The truth is I'm not actually a detail orientated person.
Actually half the time I don't even know where my car keys are.
Most of my career has been about modelling and learning
Experimenting with more prototyping ideas.
Many designers design statically.
But having a feel for the right motion and easing can do wonders on your static comps.
Class opens August 28th.
Design is not just static.
It can move and breath.
Like music, it can have a rhythm, flow, a beat and a melody that can evoke a feeling.

If a picture is worth a 1000 words.
A prototype is worth even more.
Playing around with the idea of 'stacks' and adding depth to this design.
Prototypes not only address if something works.
But also how something "feels".
Some beautifully designed sections.
And also when the copywriter keeps the paragraph length consistent :)
We've all been there when the block was intended for 70 chars and you get 300 instead :P
It's great when everyone works together cohesively.
Really enjoying the

It's fun to see lots of design work in the timeline again.
I got into this space 17 years ago because doing and looking at design work excited me.
I know in a world of metrics, KPIs, seed rounds, IPO's, big salaries and business
Being able to design from A to Z is a super power.
It means you can add value at different stages and areas of a product or brand.
Specialise and get really good at one thing and then gradually expand your scope for what you can do.
Brand guidelines from Process Masterclass
As a designer, your workspace should spark more than just a glance at your screen.
Look beyond for inspiration—books, magazines, animation, history, movies, art, words, ideas.
Look for mediums outside of your field.
Great designs solve problems; the best designs stir emotions.
You build up your design muscle by doing lots of reps and practice.
No different to becoming stronger by doing reps at the gym. You work on your biceps, quads, back etc.
You become stronger at design by doing lots of reps with visual design, typography, grids, prototyping etc.

When I'm working on a project with a big team - everything is to be organised neatly with a shared common language between all stakeholders and team members. Things are systemised, consistent and simple as possible.

My Process Masterclass opens in 21 days on the 6th of March. Which also shares my process for understanding typography and how to use it well + more.
Experimenting and playing around with type is an invaluable skill for a designer.
It's what I worked on a lot in the first 1-3 years of my career.
Having great typographic skills for UI/UX design can really set you apart from the rest.

Process Masterclass - 06 March.
A ton of thought, effort and love has gone into this class.

Yes autolayout, components, variants and all that jazz is great.
But....
Good storytelling
A focus on typography
A focus on imagery and art direction
A good grid and alignment
Structure and hierarchy
Don't sleep on these things.
The fundamentals can help you go a long way.
Any other designers relate?
Designing 90% of the work = 8 hours.
Designing the last 10% = 2 weeks.
The refinement stage is brutal haha. Design craft is a fight against perfectionism and enough.
But that refinement is what turns things from good to great.
Design is a messy process. It's not linear it's asynchronous. It's not strategy > research > IA > wires > user testing > hifi concepts > prototyping > testing > iterate > polish > systemise > build. All neatly done at each stage. It's everything with a lot of fuckery in between.
My design process is pretty similar for every project. However it doesn't mean I use every step, tool or technique that I know of. Actually quite the opposite. Depending on the team/project size, I prefer the path of least resistance. ↓
What's old is new again. Nice user-boarding by the new retro app.
I've probably seen some version of this page fold come and go over the last 15 years doing digital design.
Whats cool becomes saturated and uncool - then people forget and bring it back and suddenly its fresh

I think about the pixels in front of me, and then I look at the data and user research if there is any.

In what context will they be using this?

Prototypes are sometimes exciting.

No smooth scrolling/hijacking, no major animations.
Just testing how a simple layout and grid feels and if the hierarchy of information is right.

Figma keeps delivering. These updates are gonna ruffle some feathers, particularly around A.I - but I’ve seen this industry change so much over the last 15+ years.
The common theme to succeeding is learn, adapt to change and reinvent.
I feel like as designers we can tweak shit all day. It's like a superpower but also a curse. You want things to be just right, but it never is. So you just keep toggling back and forth.

17 years ago my first creative director made me appreciate and fall in love with great type.
And over the years I've realised it's about growing a digital/mental library of what can work for various projects.
I'm always intrigued by other designers processes. So in light of sharing heres some of mine.
Processes I used in the early days of my design career that helped me make over 6 figures. Steal them, use them, or just say I already do this damn I should be paid more!!

I've loved my career in design. It's given my life creative fulfilment and financial abundance.
My friends joke that I make big bucks playing.
But 15 years ago I almost quit before I began.

When I start a project, I work with the client to flesh out the initial art direction using a style board. See how I line to the grid, use type, and create an overall look for a project.
A lot of great things can happen if you just simplify things.
1. Just get started
2. Do the work even when it's hard
3. Stay consistent
4. Ride the momentum
5. Get feedback - was this successful or not with what I'm trying to achieve?
6. Make adjustments
7. Repeat
