Correct. Universities are not overcharging NIH. They’re undercharging everyone else.

Why are the proposed NIH indirects lower than indirects for industry-sponsored studies? It’s not like folks in industry are stupid and are letting themselves get fleeced by academic research centers… Foundations rely on the NIH indirects already at institutions.

Cutting the funding that universities use to help offset the cost of compliance with this insane system won’t solve anything. Fix the system first. 8/8

Agree with Ed here. The “market rates” that new NIH guidance quote are specious comparisons—they don’t account massive differences in admin & compliance costs for @NIH awards vs pretty much anything else.

Part of the overhead funds pay for the huge bureaucracy that is now required to support research. Over the past couple of decades there has been an explosion of rules and regulations that requires an army of administrators to manage. With the lowering of overhead payments there should be a parallel reduction in the administrative requirements for managing research programs.

I’ll be the first to admit that there are opportunities to improve how we fund & carry out science but this is some remarkable hypocrisy from someone, who as a @UCSF professor benefits massively from the system he derides. Grow up.
