RIP Toby. He did his best but at his age (I have had him for 14 years & don't know how old he was when he was gifted to me) he hadn't the will for the fight. He went downhill yesterday but still managed to eat a few dock leaves (his favourite). A lovely, friendly old chap.

First light. Ice thick on the inside of the windows. Crow cawing. Clocks gently ticking as the cats reposition themselves for maximum warmth (not much of that in here this morning). A hot mug of tea & porridge on the stove. Wrapped in fingerless gloves & a hat as the fire is lit.

Rose petal jam 🌹 Rose petals shaken/checked for insects then marinated in sugar & lemon juice for 24 hrs. Petals & marinade added to a sugar solution, brought to a boil & simmered for 25-30 mins before adding pectin & bottling in sterile jars. A taste of summer ready for winter

Two tiny wild ducks abandoned by their mum when they couldn't keep up & crying in the orchard. I listened to them calling out all afternoon in the hope that she would return for them. No luck. As the sun is setting I have adopted them before they become crow or owl food

On Sunday the emergency vet gave my most gentle #emu next to no chance of survival. He stitched the large bloody hole up in her neck/windpipe/esophagus as best he could (she was not a good patient even when sedated). She is very sore but still with us. Fingers crossed.

Poor old Toby. An old wether he is prone to stumbling. Yesterday I noticed that I couldn't see him & he had fallen over out of sight behind the barn. Sadly the crows found him first & got at one of his eyes & his tongue. Pleased to say he is eating well despite his injuries.

This is Tolly Frimble, a Stock Dove with no eyes. I have known this young dove since it was a nestling (& kept falling out of the nest in the barn overhang). Healthy but blind flying isn't an option so T.F. lives with me, safe from crows. Gentle head scratches are very welcome 🩶

Incubating #emu eggs: update. Incubation takes 55 days. The thick eggshell is opaque; there is no way to tell if the eggs are fertile. By day 40 if you talk the eggs (or sing to them 🎶) & the growing embryo hears you, the eggs may wobble. Today some eggs wobbled as I 🎶 to them!

Sick #emu is still with us 5 days after losing half of her throat. Her neck wound is looking OK considering. I will try to inject her with an antibiotic & pain-killer today which she won't like (the needles are huge). She is tired but rest is an important part of healing...

Sick #emu update. Lettuce for lunch (what you see is all she ate). It is sore for her as she has lost a big chunk of her esophagus but the good news is that she can eat (I was worried that she wouldn't be able to given her injury). Slow progress but getting better every day.

Tris - 6 months on from the accident that might have killed her. As you can see her neck is fully healed & her feathers have regrown though she has a crescent-shaped scar where her windpipe/throat was sewn back together. She is still the sweetest, most gentle #emu

Sick #emu update. 9 days since her throat injury, Tris is doing fine. The stitches on her skin are healing well & I hope the internal ones are too. She is eating & drinking OK, albeit small amounts & slowly. The vet's response to her ongoing recovery is "Wow!"

Part of a serving dish found today on a bottle dump in Rutland. Gorgeous Victorian Minton 'aster' porcelain produced c. 1886 in the potteries at Stoke-upon-Trent. The cobalt blue flowers & the crackle glaze are charming.

Spiced crab apple jelly made from left over Red Sentinel crab apples after 2 months steeping in vodka (& a few cinnamon sticks) to make crab apple liqueur. The liqueur is so wonderful I shall scale up production next year:

Woke at 2am to a wonderful thin crescent moon 🌙 & the Perseid meteor shower in a starry sky. Now busy making nectarine butter to preserve that gorgeous flavour for winter. In the garden the repeat roses are blooming again - a Whiter Shade of Pale looking glorious.

Here are the #emu chicks strengthening their legs by playing on the washable pet carpet. The youngest one (with the leg cuff) was born with spraddled legs but 12 hours with its legs tied together with wool, taped on to stop it slipping, seems to have worked. Aren't they sweet?

Multi-coloured mystery plums from one of the orchard trees. Small like damsons but plum sweet. Green going yellow with occasional purple fruit. I have no record of the variety but isn't it pretty? Lovely flavour. A few more still to pick then these will be gently cooked & bottled

This butterfly has spent the last 6 months asleep high up on a wall above the stairs inside (it is not a warm house so ideal for hibernation). Today it decided spring has arrived & I found it warming itself on the floor. Now released & flying off for breakfast in the garden.

This is the story of an emu who went on an adventure. Yesterday evening, not long before dark as I was finishing off the baling, she took fright at the noise, leapt into the sheep pasture where she threw herself through a stock fence, ran down a hedge, over another fence & away..

This is Blaze. He has cataracts in both eyes but knows his way around so it doesn't seem to trouble him. He calls to the other sheep to check where they are but finds the water trough, hay feeder & shelter without any issue. He can also still jump a hurdle at shearing time.

Fresh bedding for all the animals to keep them warm on this, the coldest night of the year. Metal food bowls icing together already & the ground is frozen hard. If you happen hear snoring later it is this all-weather #emu snuggled down beneath her straw blanket, fast asleep. ❄️❄️

This is 1 of 2 naughty emus who wouldn't go to bed as last night's thunderstorm raged. Female emus make booming noises & believe thunder is an emu rumbling at them so they stalk around as lightning flashes overhead booming back ⚡️ I got soaked. They went to bed once it moved away

Christmas Pearmain. If I could have only one apple variety this would be it; my favourite. A late dessert apple it is sweet, crisp & juicy producing a bountiful & reliable crop of flushed reddish brown & occasionally russeted fruits. The tree is much loved by roosting tawny owls

Almond 'Ingrid'. My two 4 year old trees are heaving with nuts for the first time. The gorgeous pink blossom appears in mid February & the lack of severe early spring frosts has resulted in a bumper crop. Beyond excited.

Update on the abandoned tree ducks left behind by their mum on 9 June (far left on this photo taken today). They are in fine fettle & have bonded with the 4 abandoned goslings & these younger muscovy ducklings which were born from abandoned eggs. All waifs & strays doing well!

Sunset sky. A sad day - the death of a beloved, carrot-adoring goose. Given to us some years ago when people in a neighbouring village moved away & needed to leave her behind. She was an old girl but still very chatty. A fittingly beautiful end to the day to see her off. RIP 🌈

Put some veg onto roast first thing - butternut squash, onions, a few garlic cloves, rosemary. Blitzed into soup for lunch with freshly-picked wild garlic leaves & thickened with flaked rice. Goes down well with leftover focaccia
