Some interesting facts in the background of the current GBS outbreak at Pune 1. The most common infectious agents that cause GBS include Campylobacter jejuni , Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and cytomegalovirus. C. jejuni is responsible for about a third of GBS cases & most cases are more severe than that due to other causes. 2. Bacterial outbreak is ok however these strains causing antibody mediated de mylination in people with different immunophenotypes , is worrying. 3. A similar outbreak was recorded in 2011 in the USA / Mexico crossborder. This underwent extensive epidemiological investigation and was thought to be due to contamination of drinking water more than anything else. 4. Though literature classically describes GBS as a relatively rare disease, we do see it so often. C jejuni / GBS should be a notifiable disease and active surveillance to prevent c jejuni diarrhea should be undertaken by Public health department .
